The BYD Atto 3 represents a sincere effort by the global EV manufacturer to deliver a vehicle that stands out in the electric vehicle market. The Atto 3 excels in terms of functionality, offering practical solutions for daily use, along with advanced safety features. This combination makes it a compelling option for those seeking a reliable and efficient electric vehicle. With its focus on practicality and safety, the BYD Atto 3 offers a well-rounded package that goes beyond basic EV expectations, potentially setting a new standard in its segment.

The electric vehicle wave has caught the imagination of the world, and India is no exception. As we see both traditional and new-gen automakers vie for a piece of the Indian electric pie, BYD enters the competitive arena with its Atto 3 electric SUV. While other electric vehicles may have set the stage, BYD’s Atto 3 promises a performance that could steal the spotlight. Our hands-on experience of this nascent EV model in the lush landscapes of Tamil Nadu reveals an intriguing blend of design restraint, interior ingenuity, and functionality that may well make it a formidable contender in the electric SUV class. Here’s a closer look at the BYD Atto 3.

BYD has evidently opted for a ‘less is more’ philosophy when it comes to the Atto 3’s exterior design. The aesthetic doesn’t scream for attention but rather woos you with its subtlety. One is instantly struck by the grille-less front fascia, which is becoming increasingly popular among electric vehicles. However, BYD has given its version a tasteful minimalism, devoid of any flamboyance. The tasteful chrome strip with the brand’s badge is a classic touch, although one could argue that a blacked-out version might give it a sportier aura.

The car's LED headlamps add a modern flair, even if their luminosity could be improved for more effective night time driving. The angular air dams not only serve as an aesthetic element but also enhance aerodynamics. The profile strikes a balance between sophistication and sportiness, particularly with the chic 18-inch alloy wheels and the textured pattern on the C-Pillar. While the front may be somewhat understated, the rear gets a bit more expressive with its eye-catching wraparound LED tail lights.

Transitioning from the Atto 3’s exterior to its interior is akin to stepping from a zen garden into a tech wonderland. When you are in the driver’s seat, you notice the expansive 12.8-inch display. It has a swivel feature that adds a layer of interactivity and futurism. The cabin doesn’t shy away from color; it embraces it. The two-tone grey and blue synthetic leather upholstery offers a refreshing deviation from the conventional monotone shades. Even more intriguing are the quirky design choices, such as the guitar-string accents in the door panels and the barbell air vents. These eccentric elements create an atmosphere of fun without compromising on luxury or functionality.

For tech aficionados, there’s much to explore and admire. An all-digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting, and a host of easy-to-access shortcut buttons are just a few examples. Storage isn’t an afterthought either, with smart compartments peppered throughout the cabin, including a spacious area beneath the center console, equipped with power outlets and a USB port. All these elements come together to form a cohesive Interior experience that manages to be both playful and practical, luxurious and laid-back, all while underlining BYD’s unique vision for what an electric SUV can be.

BYD has gone to great lengths to make the Atto 3 a sanctuary of safety. One remarkable feature that deserves special mention is the Advanced Driver Assistance System. This cutting-edge technology package includes lane departure warnings to keep you on the straight and narrow lanes, adaptive cruise control for a more relaxed driving experience, and blind-spot monitoring to cover those hard-to-see areas. For added peace of mind, a 360-degree camera system keeps you fully aware of your surroundings—particularly useful in busy city environments. It’s constructed from high-strength steel and equipped with eight airbags to offer optimum protection in the unfortunate event of a collision. Even pedestrians haven’t been overlooked— the Atto 3 comes with an acoustic vehicle alerting system to warn them when the car is approaching at low speeds, a critical feature for electric vehicles which can be surprisingly quiet. Tire pressure monitoring is standard across all variants, adding another layer of safety. The five-star NCAP rating is not just a stamp but a testament to the vehicle’s overarching commitment to safety.

The Atto 3 sports a single electric motor that delivers 201 horsepower and a generous 310 Nm of torque. The vehicle can catapult from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.9 seconds, which is impressive. But where it truly shines is its range. Boasting a 77 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, it promises a driving range of up to 450 km on a single charge, under optimal conditions. Charging solutions are flexible. The Atto 3 supports both AC and DC fast charging, taking around 8 hours for a full charge with a regular household charger but just about an hour to go from 10% to 80% with a fast charger. That means range anxiety, a traditional bugbear of electric vehicle ownership, is effectively mitigated.

Driving the Atto 3 is like commanding a cloud; it floats more than it rolls. The adaptive suspension does an admirable job of swallowing up road imperfections, delivering a ride quality that’s almost limousine-like. However, don’t let the plush ride fool you into thinking that the Atto 3 isn’t agile. Steering is precise, and the car corners with surprising verve, thanks in part to its low center of gravity courtesy of the under-floor battery pack. The vehicle performs admirably both in the chaos of city traffic and on long, winding highways, making it a versatile choice for various driving scenarios.

At a premium price point of Rs. 36 lakh to Rs 36.52 lakh (ex-showroom), the Atto 3 may raise some eyebrows. Yet, when you look at the total package—interior comfort, safety features, and its competitive edge—it justifies the cost, outclassing rivals in multiple dimensions.

The Atto 3 doesn’t enter the market quietly; it roars with intent, aiming squarely at established players like the MG ZS EV and the Hyundai Kona Electric. The Atto 3 bursts in with freshness and an array of features that can potentially outshine its competitors. While it may have its imperfections, its strengths far outweigh its weaknesses, making it a compelling option in India’s increasingly competitive electric car landscape.

What's New?

The BYD Atto 3, the first electric passenger vehicle introduced by the Chinese automaker in India, gets an update globally. With its official debut expected in the coming months, images of the refreshed all-electric SUV have surfaced online. The updated model, known as the Yuan Plus in China, now bears a closer resemblance to its smaller and more affordable counterpart, the Atto 2 (also called the Yuan Up in China).

The facelifted BYD Atto 3 features a redesigned front fascia, incorporating a sportier bumper and a larger trapezoidal air intake. The headlight design remains unchanged and continues to be accentuated by the chrome strip connecting them. At the rear, the SUV gets an updated roof spoiler and full-width tail lamps, which get a wave-like lighting pattern. While the side profile remains largely similar to the outgoing version, the new model gets fresh alloy wheel designs.

While the interior remains under wraps for now, the new Atto 3 is claimed to include BYD’s "God’s Eye C" (DiSus 100) driving assistance system. The SUV is now equipped with a three-camera module along with four surround-view cameras, which are essentially improved ADAS functionalities.

Mechanically, the Atto 3 facelift is expected to remain unchanged. The India-spec model is currently offered with two battery pack options: a 49.92 kWh unit delivering a range of 468 km per charge and a larger 60.5 kWh pack capable of covering 521 km (ARAI figures) on a single charge. In India, the Atto 3 is available in three variants: Dynamic, Premium, and Superior. Powering all variants is a front-mounted electric motor that produces 201 bhp and 310 Nm of torque.
