car&bike Expert Take
“The BMW M4 that is available in India in the form of the Competition xDrive (standard variant) provides aggressive performance with a decent practicality. It is best for drivers who appreciate control and precision. It may not be for those that require comfort-oriented suspension or higher ground clearance. The emphasis here is on performance over comfort.”

Introduced worldwide as the two-door version of the M3, the BMW M4 has been on sale in India since 2014. The current model is based on the G82 platform, reaching the market in 2022, and the latest facelift version of 2024 brought some design changes and bumped the power to 530 bhp, while the limited-run model M4 CS has a more track-oriented version design with higher power and lesser weight.
BMW puts the M4 in the role of the "core" M car: The sweet spot between the playful M3 and the more luxurious, heavier M5. It is not designed to be chauffeur-driven, but rather is targeted at someone who prefers to be behind the wheel. Unlike larger M cars, the M4 is focused on providing a raw, connected driving experience, whilst maintaining just enough practicality with its 2+2 layout as well as a usable boot.
This review brings together expert impressions and real-world evaluation by the car&bike team. From its sharp styling to its highly capable all-wheel-drive system, we found that the M4 manages to balance everyday usability with serious performance intent. Expert insights from auto journalist Siddharth Vinayak Patankar on our YouTube channel have also been added in this review. We have covered every element to present a better understanding of what this car really offers on Indian roads.

The BMW M4's powertrain is designed with ultimate performance, sharp response and track-ready capability in mind. In India, the M4 is equipped with a single, very powerful engine configuration, which is complemented by an advanced all-wheel-drive configuration.
Engine Option Tested
The following table lists the current engine option available in this coupe:
Engine | Power | Torque | Transmission Options |
3.0-Litre Twin-Turbo Inline-6 (S58) | 530 bhp | 650 Nm | Eight-speed M Steptronic Automatic |
Driving Experience: Real World
City Driving
In the city, we found the M4 to be more usable than we would have expected. In Efficient mode, it is calm, and the eight-speed automatic is smooth at low speeds. The steering is light, which makes U-turns easy. However, the low ground clearance and stiff suspension mean that you have to be careful over speed breakers.
Highway Driving
On the highway, the M4 comes alive. Acceleration is very strong, and overtakes are effortless due to the 650 Nm torque. It feels stable at high speeds, and incorporating the AWD system adds confidence while cornering.
Drive Modes & Setup
There are several drive modes with individual settings for engine, suspension, steering, and brakes. Sport and Sport Plus make the car feel sharper and M Modes (Road, Sport, Track) change the overall behaviour. You can also change between 4WD, 4WD Sport, and 2WD.
As Siddharth Vinayak Patankar says,
“It gives you an incredibly great sense of control.”
The BMW M4 looks aggressive at first glance, and unlike previous M cars, this one makes no effort to remain subtle. The facelifted model also puts it on par with BMW's latest design direction, particularly with the updated lighting and the sharper details.
Here’s a summary of the car’s most noticeable elements:
- The proportions are low and wide, which makes it look planted.
- It has a long bonnet, sloping roofline, and flared wheel arches.
- The massive vertical kidney grille is prominent and functional.
- New vertical LED DRLs and laser taillights give it a sharper look.
BMW M4 vs Porsche 911 vs Mercedes-AMG C63 Dimensions
Dimension | BMW M4 Competition xDrive | Porsche 911 Carrera | Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance |
Length | 4,801 mm | 4,542 mm | 4,842 mm |
Width | 1,887 mm | 1,852 mm | 1,900 mm |
Height | 1,399 mm | 1,298 mm | 1,458 mm |
Wheelbase | 2,857 mm | 2,450 mm | 2,875 mm |
Ground Clearance | 120 mm | 109 mm | 112 mm |
Kerb Weight | 1,835 kg | 1,595 kg | 2,165 kg |
The M4 is absolutely in the middle here. While it's clear that the Porsche is the lightest and most compact, the C63 is much heavier because of its hybrid setup. The M4 provides a balance in that it provides more stability than the 911, yet is not as bulky as the C63.
The 2024 facelift of the BMW M4 builds on its aggressive design with sharper lighting and subtle updates. We found that while it may not stand out in pictures, in person, it has a strong road presence.
As Siddharth notes,
“It may not impress much in pictures, but in person, it feels sporty and appealing.”
Front Profile
The front is dominated by the massive vertical kidney grille, which is accompanied by new adaptive LED headlights and arrow-shaped DRLs. The grille is functional and helps in engine cooling. We found the design bold and unmistakably aggressive.
Side Profile
The coupe silhouette has a sloping roofline, flared arches and a staggered 19/20-inch alloy set-up. The carbon fibre roof and clean shoulder line give it a tight, athletic stance.
Rear Profile
At the rear end, the facelift debuts new laser taillights in a distinctive 3D pattern that replaces the previous one. A subtle lip spoiler, large diffuser and quad exhaust set-up complete the look. We found the rear to be as dramatic as the front, particularly with the wide stance and the low-slung profile.
‘Driver-focused’ is the first thing we noticed when we got inside the BMW M4. The cabin uses Merino leather and carbon fibre trims, and overall quality feels solid. We found it manages to feel premium without losing its sporty intent.
Cabin Layout and Quality
The dashboard features a curved display with a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen. The layout is clean and modern, though many controls are now touchscreen-based. Fit and finish are excellent, and we didn’t notice any rattles over rough roads.

Seating Comfort
First Row
The front M Sport seats are supportive and heavily bolstered. They are electrically adjustable and hold you well during spirited driving. We also found them comfortable enough for longer drives. Visibility is decent for a coupe, though the low seating position does take some getting used to.
Second Row
The rear seats are strictly for two passengers, and while space is usable, it’s not generous. We found that average-sized adults can fit for short journeys, but it’s not where you’d want to spend hours. The sculpted seats hold you in place well, especially when the car is driven hard.
BMW has positioned the M4 at a premium, but it justifies this with strong performance and standard equipment. The Competition variant comes well-loaded, so you are not forced into adding many options.
However, optional extras like carbon ceramic brakes, bucket seats, and Individual paint can push the price up quickly. We found that while the base price looks competitive for the performance, the final on-road cost can rise significantly.
BMW M4 Ex-Showroom Prices in India
Variant | Powertrain | Ex-Showroom Price (Approx.) |
M4 Competition M xDrive | 3.0-Litre Twin-Turbo Petrol AWD (530 bhp) | Rs. 1.53 – 1.55 Crore |
M4 CS | 3.0-Litre Twin-Turbo Petrol AWD (543 bhp) | Rs. 1.89 Crore |
Buyers in this segment may not prioritise fuel efficiency, but in India, running costs still matter, especially for longer drives. The BMW M4 balances this reasonably well for a 530 bhp performance coupe, provided you drive it calmly.
Here’s what we found out in our tests:
- Fuel efficiency drops sharply when driven aggressively.
- In “Efficient” mode, the engine and gearbox help keep consumption in check.
- City driving results in lower mileage due to traffic conditions.
The following table outlines our observed mileage compared to expected figures.
Observed Fuel Efficiency During Testing
| Engine & Transmission | Claimed Mileage* | Real-World City Mileage | Real-World Highway Mileage |
| 3.0-Litre Twin-Turbo Petrol (AT AWD) | 9-10 kmpl | 5-7 kmpl | 8-10 kmpl |
*Note: BMW does not officially publish ARAI figures for M models in India.
The BMW M4 comes with a strong mix of performance-focused hardware and modern safety systems.
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
It gets six airbags as standard, which covers front, side and curtain protection. The car is based on the four-series platform with a five-star Euro NCAP rating. Three-point seatbelts are available for all passengers, as well as the option of mounting the ISOFIX in the rear seats.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
Safety features include an ABS with Cornering Brake Control and Dynamic Brake Control, and Dynamic Stability Control. You also get M Dynamic Mode and a 10-stage traction control system, which we found useful in managing slip during aggressive driving.
Standard features include cruise control with braking function, attentiveness assistance, and a speed limiter. The optional Driving Assistant Professional package includes adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist and emergency stop assist. Parking support comes with sensors, a rear camera, and an optional 360 Degree system with a reversing assistant.
Safety Verdict
We should mention that the BMW M4 itself hasn't been crash tested separately, but it's inherited the five-star Euro NCAP rating of the 4 Series platform. What is striking is that it combines serious performance hardware with configurable safety systems, so you can either have control or confidence depending on how you choose to drive it.
The technology of the BMW M4 is geared towards the driver, yet it still has enough features for everyday usability.
Infotainment and Interface
- The system is fast and responsive, with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay working without any issues.
- The Harman Kardon 16-speaker sound system provides clear cabin sound throughout the cabin.
- The head-up display displays important M-specific information, such as revs and gear position.
Cabin Convenience and Practical Tech
- The front seats have electric adjustment, with memory for the driver.
- Seat heating is standard and ventilation is optional.
- Especially useful are the M1 and M2 buttons on the steering that can be used for quick drive mode changes.
- The three-zone climate control works nicely, but the climate functions within the touchscreen can be distracting.
The BMW M4 offers good boot space for a performance coupe:
- It has 440 litres of capacity with all seats up.
- It can easily fit two medium suitcases or weekend luggage.
- The wide opening makes loading simple.
- The rear seats can be folded to increase space further.
As we evaluated, this is a car that clearly prioritises the driver, but still manages to stay usable every day.
City Driving
In the city, we found the M4 to be more manageable than expected. In Efficient mode, the engine is calm and the gearbox is smooth at low speeds. The steering is light and makes driving through traffic effortless for a car of this size. The stiff suspension and low ground clearance are, however, still a concern.
Highway Driving
On the highway, the M4 is perfectly in its element. We found it very stable up high with a lot of acceleration to make overtaking other vehicles easy. The AWD system gives the driver confidence in corners, and the steering becomes sharper as speeds increase. That said, its weight can be felt during quick direction changes.

Siddharth adds,
“The dynamics are just unbelievably good. Actually no, make that great.”
BMW keeps the M4 lineup simple in India, with two clear versions. We evaluated both and found the focus stays firmly on performance.
- M4 Competition M xDrive: The standard model. It gets AWD as standard, 530 bhp, and balances daily usability with serious performance.
- M4 CS: A limited-run, more hardcore version with 543 bhp, reduced weight, and sharper tuning for track use.

Take a look at what the BMW M4 variants have on offer:
| Variant | Engine & Transmission | Key Additions | Best Suited For |
| M4 Competition M xDrive | 3.0-Litre Twin-Turbo Petrol, Eight-Speed AT, AWD | 530 bhp, Adaptive M Suspension, M xDrive (AWD with RWD mode), Curved Display, Harman Kardon audio | Buyers who want a fast, usable everyday sports car |
| M4 CS | 3.0-Litre Twin-Turbo Petrol, Eight-Speed AT, AWD | 543 bhp, weight reduction, more aggressive setup, track-focused tuning | Enthusiasts focused on track performance and exclusivity |
The Essentials That You Don't Get
- No manual gearbox option in India
- No rear-wheel-drive-only variant as standard
- No rear-axle steering
- No spare tyre
The decision to buy the right BMW M4 in India is not difficult. This actually comes down to whether you are looking for the standard all-rounder or just the more track-focused version.
Best for Most Buyers: M4 Competition M xDrive
For most buyers, this is the one. We found it balances daily usability with serious performance. You get 530 bhp, AWD grip, and enough comfort for regular use. This can very well double up as your daily driver and a sports car.
Best for Track Enthusiasts: M4 CS
If performance is your priority, go for the limited-edition M4 CS. It’s more powerful, lighter, and feels sharper to drive. We found it trades some comfort for a more focused, aggressive experience.
The performance coupe space in India is limited, but the BMW M4 Competition still faces strong competition. We evaluated its key rivals and found each one offers a different take on performance. The Porsche 911 Carrera focuses on precision and driving feel, while the Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance delivers extreme hybrid power. Here’s how the M4 compares.
| Model | Engine Options | Mileage (ARAI) | Key Value Proposition | Ex-Showroom Price |
| BMW M4 Competition xDrive | 3.0-Litre Twin-Turbo Inline-Six | 9.7 – 10.24 kmpl | Performance and usability balance | Rs. 1.53 – Rs. 1.55 Crore |
| Porsche 911 Carrera | 3.0-Litre Twin-Turbo Flat-Six | 9.17 – 11.1 kmpl | Benchmark driving feel | Rs. 1.99 – Rs. 2.11 Crore |
| Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E | 2.0-Litre Hybrid Turbo | 9.4 kmpl | Hybrid performance | Rs. 1.91 – Rs. 1.95 Crore |
Which Performance Car Should You Choose?
- Choose the BMW M4 Competition if you want a balance of performance and daily usability.
- Choose the Porsche 911 Carrera if the driving feel matters most.
- Choose the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E if you want maximum power and hybrid tech.
Pros
- Explosive 3.0-Litre twin-turbo with strong performance
- M xDrive AWD adds grip while allowing RWD drift mode
- Usable for daily driving with a 440-litre boot
- Sharp handling with excellent balance and control
Cons
- Low ground clearance needs caution over speed breakers
- Stiff ride quality on rough roads
- No rear-axle steering and no spare tyre
Verdict
The BMW M4 Competition xDrive is built for drivers first. We evaluated it in both city and highway conditions, and what stands out is how easily it adapts. In calmer modes, it feels manageable, but push it harder, and it becomes sharp and aggressive. The driving experience is its biggest strength. It feels precise, controlled, and very quick, with the AWD system adding confidence in corners. At the same time, it can very well double up as your daily driver and sports car, which adds to its appeal.
There are compromises. The low ground clearance and stiff suspension can be limiting on bad roads. But overall, the package feels complete and purposeful. If you want a performance coupe that is fast, engaging, and still usable every day, the M4 makes a strong case.
BMW M4 Mileage
BMW M4 mileage is 9 KM/L as per ARAI The Automatic Petrol engine has a mileage of 9.8 KM/L.
| Fuel Type | Transmission | Mileage | City Mileage | Highway Mileage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol | Automatic | 9.8 KM/L | 9.8 KM/L | 0 KM/L |
