TVS XL 100 Expert Review
Pros
- Hardy, rugged moped
- Compact size
- Great manouverability
Cons
- Average performance
- Moped design may not be everyone's liking
- Small fuel tank
The TVS XL 100 is a high-selling moped with exceptional load carrying capacity. More buyers in the rural parts of the country, the XL 100 is hardy and rugged. Small fuel tank and moped design may not be to everyone's liking. It is hardy workhorse and can be seen in use especially in rural areas and tier II cities, with many using them as transport vehicles for small goods. The XL100 comes in three variants - heavy duty, heavy duty special and comfort.
TVS XL100
Although it may seem that the TVS XL100 is a bit insignificant, this lightweight machine has taken over the two-wheeler market in India. Its popularity went to the point where it outsold their entire motorcycle portfolio in 2020 and this success is not even surprising as the TVS XL100 is one of the most utilitarian and affordable motorcycles for city commute.
How is the design?
The TVS Top Spec XL 100 is powered by a 99.7cc fuel injected engine, which is used across the range. Peak torque and power figures are at 6.9Nm at 3500rpm and 4.4hp at 6000 rpm, respectively, the same as their previous BS4 model. The TVS XL100 appears to be fancy, with a robust and sleek body which is appointed by an appealing design. The moped is featured by broad and well-padded seats, which adds to the comfort of both the rider and the pillion. The rear seat of the motorcycle is detachable and can be used as a small carrier. This load-carrying moped comes with a range of bright colours: dual tone plastics, beige coloured plastics, a comfortable backrest that is placed on a blingy chrome grab rail and finally, it also features a retro headlight cowl.
How is the performance?
A 100cc air-cooled 4-stroke single cylinder engine is able to produce a maximum power of 4.4hp at 6000 rpm along with a peak torque of 6.5Nm at 3500 rpm. In one word, TVS XL100 is a power unit, scoring high on refinement and the motorcycle exhibits an efficient mileage of 67 kmpl, as claimed by TVS itself. The bike has an excellent load carrying capacity, and the long platform can be used by riders as a front carrier. A seamless and smooth single-speed gearbox is integrated in TVS XL100 and it performs in precise coordination along with a centrifugal clutch to support a smooth drive to its wheels.
How does the TVS XL100 ride?
Speaking of its top speed, the TVS XL100 is ideal for the highways as well as the open stretch in the city. Even at its top speed, TVS XL100 can deliver a mileage of 64.7 kmpl. At slower speed, the TVS XL100 may deliver 72.4 Kmpl within the city. Thus, it is fairly an ideal ride for city commute, affordable and fuel efficient. However, the drum brake setup of this motorcycle is just as weak as before. For riders, vibrations are yet another concern and they are expected at around 40 kph and might feel even stronger in the foot pegs at the top speed of 60 kph.
How comfortable is the TVS XL100?
TVS XL100 offers a series of comfort features to its riders and this includes a wider front platform, which the rider might use for carrying heavy loads. Coming to the seats, the broad and comfortable twin seats not just add to the comfort of the rider, but also offers the same comfort to the pillion. The single seat is long, cushioned and well-padded providing adequate space for two people to sit comfortably. The foot peg is positioned perfectly as well and the ride is ideal for both tall and short people. The ability to absorb potholes and bumps is impressive. The multi-reflector headlamps of TVS XL100 at the front offer clear visibility with its sharp illumination even while riding on dark rural roads.
How's the tech?
The TVS XL100 comes with attractive tech features including fuel warning indicator, speedometer analogue, tachometer, low oil indicator, engine kill switch, fuel gauge, tripmeter, low-battery indicator, clock, pass light, loud DC horn, mobile charger, and tilt sensor. Some of the other tech features of TVS XL100 include multi-reflector LED DRL light, offering clear visibility even while riding on dark roads, on-board diagnostics indicator, SBT, chrome mirror and so on. A new attractive feature i-Touch Start has also been added to the ride, and this feature is equipped with ISG technology, which offers exceptional performance. This tech feature is supported by integrated “Starter Generator Technology”, which enables silent and instant start of the vehicle. TVS XL100 is also powered by the ETFi (Eco Thrust Fuel Injection) technology, which is responsible for top-notch engine performance as well as better driveability, ensuring a seamless riding experience. It also offers 15% more mileage to the rider. The easy ‘on-off’ switch on the moped enables the rider to stop or start the motorcycle effortlessly.
How's the mileage of the TVS XL100?
TVS XL100 is widely known for its mileage efficiency and fuel economy. The mileage offered by the vehicle ranges between 55 to 67 km/L. Both the TVS XL100 Heavy Duty and TVS XL100 Comfort offer the same mileage of 55 to 67 km/L, more than the previous TVS Ntorq 125, which offered 47 km/L.
