    Introduction

    TATA Harrier Exterior

    • Tata Motors gave a mid-life refresh to its popular mid-size SUV, the Harrier, in late 2023.
    • This update gave the SUV a much-needed update ever since it was first introduced in India.
    • As of late 2025, the brand retails this SUV with only a diesel powertrain, which will change soon.
    • The company will introduce a petrol version to compete with the Creta and Grand Vitara alongside the EV derivative launch timeline.
    • But for now, prospective buyers can expect a well-packaged diesel mid-size SUV.

    Exterior

    TATA Harrier Grille

    • The exterior highlights of the current Harrier include new LED bars at the front and rear and tweaked bumpers.
    • Up front is a new grille and LED headlamps that are now placed in the corner of the front bumpers.
    • The silhouette of the car remains almost identical to the original Harrier, but it now rides on 19-inch alloy wheels.
    • Otherwise, the most prominent change at the back is the 'Harrier' lettering along with new LED taillamps.
    • As for the special editions, each come in a unique colour and embellishments to provide some exclusivity to a buyer.

    Interior

    TATA Harrier Interior

    • The current Harrier is a facelifted version, and its cabin received a major overhaul.
    • The top-spec variants boast a dual-tone interior theme along with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment screen with wireless mobile connectivity.
    • A fully digital instrument cluster comes with a new interface and can be customised according to the driver's choice.
    • The old aircon control panel is now replaced by a touchscreen unit with two toggle switches.
    • Moreover, the SUV now boasts an illuminated panoramic sunroof and ambient lighting.
    • It also gets a JLR-inspired gear knob, JBL-sourced speaker with in-built subwoofer, air purifier, rotary dial for drive modes, and a wireless charger.
    • The Harrier SUV has already scored a five-star safety rating in the global NCAP crash test.
    • On the safety front, it comes equipped with seven airbags, advanced electronic stability program, ADAS with 11 safety functions, and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

    Powertrain

    TATA Harrier Seat

    • Tata Motors has not made any mechanical changes to the facelifted Harrier.
    • It continues to be powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine.
    • This oil burner churns out 170bhp and 350Nm of torque.
    • The power is sent only to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed torque converter.
    • Recently, the carmaker has introduced the Harrier EV and soon there will also be a petrol Harrier.

car&bike Expert Take

“The Tata Harrier made a name for itself with its striking road presence and tough, imposing looks in the Indian market. You do have to manage a bit with its wide footprint in tight city parking, but on the flip side, it’s a capable long-distance cruiser with exceptional stability on the highways.”

The Tata Harrier sits in the premium mid-size five-seater SUV space. Built on the OMEGA-Arc platform, it targets buyers who want a large, commanding vehicle without stretching their budget to three-row SUVs like the Safari.  For years, buyers kept saying that there should have been a petrol engine option. Tata finally answered this demand, launching the recent Harrier with a brand-new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol alongside the proven 2.0-litre diesel.

This highly anticipated 'Hyperion' addition has lowered the car’s entry price to a highly aggressive Rs. 12.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Seshan Vijayraghvan has continuously discussed the SUV’s capabilities throughout the years, from one of its facelifts to its new turbo-petrol variant. He remarks about the new mechanical setup,

“What really stands out with this engine is its refinement.”

Both engines of the Tata Harrier have a turbocharged nature.

Engine Specifications

1.5-Litre Turbo Petrol168 bhp280 NmSix-speed Manual / AutomaticFront-Wheel Drive
2.0-Litre Turbo Diesel168 bhp350 NmSix-speed Manual / Six-speed AutomaticFront-Wheel Drive

Key Takeaways

  • The 1.5-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine produces 168 bhp and 280 Nm of torque.
  • The 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine carries over the earlier output for effortless cruising.
  • Both engines can run with a six-speed manual or a torque converter automatic transmission.

City Driving Experience

  • The new turbo-petrol engine is quiet and refined for city rides.
  • Power delivery from the petrol engine is smooth and instantaneous.
  • The diesel engine still feels slightly heavy in crawling traffic.
  • But the six-speed automatic shifts smoothly without any lag.

Highway Driving Experience

  • The diesel engine pulls the heavy SUV forward with zero hesitation on the highways.
  • The turbo-petrol engine can pull off strong highway overtakes as well.
  • Eco mode focuses on efficiency, while Sport mode is preferred for quick manoeuvres.
  • Both engines can maintain triple-digit speeds without straining all day long.

Seshan says,

“The Harrier uses the same six-speed AISIN-sourced torque converter as the Sierra.”

The Harrier has always been a head-turner. Its latest exterior updates now make it look much sharper.

  • The 2,741 mm wheelbase pushes the wheels to the corners.

Build Quality & Materials

The doors given in this car are extremely heavy, while the body secured a full five-star rating in the Bharat NCAP safety tests. As for the interior, it replaces older, hard plastics with premium soft-touch materials, leatherette wrapping, and gloss panels.

Seshan says, “The engine has good grunt, and it builds power and speed smoothly and surely. Yes, there is some turbo lag in the lower revs, especially below 1800 rpm, however, once the turbo kicks in, the motor feels alive and ready to charge. The output is strong, and the performance feels spot on for the Harrier.”

A futuristic, tech-heavy aesthetic runs alongside the Harrier’s identity.

Lighting & Front Identity

  • The connected split LED light bar runs from the bonnet’s left to right.
  • The main LED projector headlamps sit lower down on the bumper in dark, angular housings.
  • The grille has a body-coloured or gloss-black pattern instead of traditional chrome mesh.

Side Profile

  • The side profile highlights the muscular, flared wheel arches and a slightly sloping roofline.
  • It rides on massive 17-inch to 19-inch alloy wheels that fill the arches perfectly.
  • The thick tyres protect the alloy wheels from getting damaged on bad roads.
  • The wide doors make entry and exit easy.

Rear Profile

  • The rear features a sharp, connected LED tail lamp setup with modern styling.
  • Z-shaped lighting signatures sit inside the main brake lamps.
  • There’s also an aerodynamic spoiler here, sporting the high-mounted stop lamp.

Pros

  • The new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine
  • The 14.5-inch touchscreen
  • JBL Dolby Atmos audio system
  • Excellent ride quality on all road surfaces

Cons

  • The touch-sensitive climate control panel
  • No AWD or 4x4 option
  • The massive width hinders city parking

Verdict

With the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol motor, Tata has fixed its biggest shortcoming and made the Harrier accessible to a much wider audience now. Its suspension feels robust as ever, the massive rear-seat space is segment-leading, and the five-star rating means it can handle most of whatever challenging Indian road conditions throw at it. The distracting HVAC controls and inconsistent service standards at service centers can bother some, but for the most part, the Harrier’s toughness and loaded tech kit will overshadow everything else.

Seshan sums up the car,

“This new petrol engine fits the Harrier well. If you were on the fence purely because it was diesel-only, it now deserves a serious look.”

I have been driving a Tata Harrier XT Dark Edition (Diesel) since 2021 and have covered around 76,000 km. Sharing my experience based on driving across highways, cities, and several trips to the Himalayas, including challenging terrains in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Leh-Ladakh. The Harrier has a powerful engine, delivers good mileage, and offers excellent pickup. Both the front and rear seats are very comfortable, with ample legroom for passengers. The boot space is sufficient for 4–5 medium-sized trolleys or travel bags, making it an excellent choice for long road trips. The suspension setup is also very good and handles rough roads and mountain terrain comfortably. One area where I felt the vehicle lagged initially was the infotainment software, but Tata has significantly improved it in the newer versions. Being a diesel vehicle, there is some engine noise, but it is not excessive. The steering felt slightly heavy in my version, although I am not sure whether this has been improved in the latest models. Tata's service experience has generally been good. The service teams listen to customer concerns and work to resolve issues. Occasionally, there may be some challenges at the service center level, but with proper follow-up, the issues are usually addressed satisfactorily. Overall, despite being a 2WD vehicle, I have never faced any major issues while driving across different terrains, including mountainous regions. It has proven to be a reliable, comfortable, and capable companion for both daily commuting and long-distance travel.

  • Premium car for luxurious people
    4.0
    Adventure(Diesel)
After driving the Tata Harrier for a few months, I can confidently say it’s a remarkable SUV for those who value style, comfort, and performance. The 2.0-liter Kryotec diesel engine delivers excellent power and a smooth driving experience, whether in the city or on highways. The Harrier’s suspension is well-tuned, offering a stable and comfortable ride even on rough roads. Inside, the Harrier impresses with its spacious and premium cabin. The soft-touch materials, large infotainment system, and ergonomic design give it a luxurious feel. The seats are well-cushioned and provide excellent support, making long drives enjoyable. Rear seat space is generous, with ample legroom and headroom, making it ideal for families. The large boot space further adds to its practicality. The Harrier’s bold and aggressive design stands out on the road, giving it a commanding presence. Its robust build quality enhances confidence in its safety, backed by features like six airbags, ABS with EBD, and ESP. However, the Harrier has a few downsides. It lacks a 4x4 option, which might disappoint off-road enthusiasts. Additionally, the infotainment system, though feature-rich, could be more intuitive. Compared to rivals like the Jeep Compass, it offers less refined driving dynamics but compensates with better interior space and pricing. Overall, the Tata Harrier is a great choice for those seeking a stylish, comfortable, and spacious SUV. It strikes an excellent balance between value and performance, making it a strong contender in its segment.

Good SUV for daily use. The Harrier handles well, but the fuel efficiency could be improved. Harrier is reliable and comfortable. However, the boot space is a bit less for long trips. Innova Crysta would be the better choice.
