The government of India has notified new fuel efficiency norms for passenger vehicles called Corporate Average Fuel Consumption (CAFL). Under new norms, the passenger vehicles need to be 14% more fuel efficient by 2016-17, while 38% five years thereafter. These new norms will be applicable on all vehicles running on petrol, diesel and gas.

The new standards implemented by the ministry of road transport and highways, will propel India into the league of select nations that strictly impose such norms with intolerant penalties for violation. The countries that follow such norms are United States, Germany, Japan and China.

Currently, passenger vehicles including cars, utility vehicles and vans have fuel efficiency limit of about 16kmpl. After the mandate come into action, the new vehicles will have an average fuel efficiency of 18.2km by 2016-17 and 22kmpl by 2021-22. After execution, the new fuel efficiency standards will help saving so much fuel and money spent on importing fuel.

Fuel consumption of vehicles will be calculated on the basis of weight.
