2014 Beijing Motorshow: Volkswagen reveals the Golf R400
Highlights
Volkswagen revealed the sketch of the Golf R400 ahead of its official unveiling at the Beijing Motor Show and now we can see the car in the flesh.
The concept is based on the Golf VII R and carries over the same 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine but has received a modified turbocharger that has a higher maximum charge pressure along with a reinforced crankcase.
The direct result is that the output has been increased by 99bhp and 70Nm which takes the overall tally to 398bhp and 450 Nm. All that power is sent to the 4MOTION four-wheel drive system via a 6-speed DSG gearbox.
So, 0-100km/h is dealt in 3.9 seconds while top speed has gone up to 280 km/h. The Golf 400R weighs the same as the regular R (1420kgs) but is 20mm wider on both sides as a result of the new flared wheel arches paying tribute to the 1998 Rallye Golf G60.
On the inside, the Golf R400 has prepared motorsport shell seats featuring built-in head restraints and belt openings while the four individual seat have been wrapped around in cross-quilted Alcantara & carbon leather with Lemon Yellow contrasting stitching.
Volkswagen says the Golf R 400 is only a concept at this point and for the moment there aren't any plans for production series.
