The Border Road Organisation (BRO) is known for its stellar work and recent projects such as the Atal tunnel and Umling La, the world's highest motorable road are world class examples. Adding another feather to its cap, the BRO has managed to open the Zoji-La (pass) in January which is likely to boost the strategic connectivity in the Ladakh region, especially on the backdrop of the standoff with China on Line of Actual Control (LAC). In a record incident, 72 vehicles crossed the Zoji-La mountain pass for the first time ever on January 2.

Now for some perspective on why this is a big deal, the Zoji-La is the linkage between the Ladakh region and lower regions of North and transportation becomes a huge issue in this part of the world during the winter season. Now since the pass is open, movement of goods, people and troops will be possible almost throughout the year save for those days when the weather is unforgiving, and the region experiences heavy snowfall. BRO has been working on extending the winter operations of the pass by deploying equipment and personnel. Keeping Zoji-La open in January is a huge achievement. 94 vehicles had passed through Jozi La on December 31 as the pass was kept open by BRO at -10 degrees Celsius. Construction of the 14.2 km long Zoji La road tunnel too is underway.
