Indian laws don´t allow any car to ply on the road without an RTO registration. So even the new car that you plan to drive home from the showroom must already be registered. Since issuing a permanent registration number takes some time, RTOs allow us to apply for a temporary registration number for our cars. In fact, one cannot even drive from the dealership to the RTO for a permanent registration without first sticking on a temporary registration number. This process is now made simpler since you can apply for it online. Temporary registration numbers are issued as yellow stickers to be stuck on your blank number plate. Nowadays, dealerships take care of all the registration business before you collect your car. But if ever you need to do it yourself, here´s how one goes about it.
Temporary registration number
The number provided by the dealer from whom the vehicle was acquired is referred to as the temporary registration number. The temporary registration number is unique to each vehicle and has a one-month validity. Vehicle owners must get their vehicles registered by the concerned Regional Transport Office (RTO) authority.
