Why The Grand i10 Facelift Is A Crucial Model For Hyundai

Ever since it was launched in 2013, the Grand i10 proved to be a winner for Hyundai India, with sales ranging from as high as 15,000 units a month to no less than 8,000 units. The Grand i10 Facelift should do even better for the Korean company.

Highlights

  • The Grand i10 Facelift gets a host of updates
  • Hyundai has dropped the prices of the 2017 model on some variants
  • Its biggest competition will be the Maruti Swift

The Grand i10 finally received a much needed facelift from Hyundai and although there hasn't been a complete overhaul, the update is enough to make the car a little more contemporary. The fact that Hyundai has dropped prices on some variants will also help that cause! The Hyundai Grand i10 Facelift gets a few updates in the form of new bumpers at both ends, DRLs up front, a new 7-inch touchscreen infotainment which comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Also, it retains some of its other convenience features such as a reverse-parking camera and rear AC vents, which were segment first when the car was first launched and are even now. You can read all about the updates in our review of the Hyundai Grand i10 Facelift.

Hyundai Grand i10 Facelift Review:

hyundai grand i10(The Hyundai Grand i10 was the 5th best-selling model in India for the month of January, 2017)

Ever since it was launched in 2013, the Grand i10 proved to be a winner for Hyundai India, with sales ranging from as high as 15,000 units a month to no less than 8,000 units.

Top ten selling cars of January, 2017

Rank Car Model January, 2017 Unit Sales January, 2016 Unit Sales Percentage change
1 Maruti Suzuki Alto 22,998 21,462 7%
2 Maruti Suzuki Dzire 18,088 17,587 3%
3 Maruti Suzuki WagonR 14,930 12,744 17%
4 Maruti Suzuki Swift 14,545 14,057 3%
5 Hyundai Grand i10 13,010 9,934 31%
6 Hyundai i20 11,460 9,604 19%
7 Maruti Suzuki Celerio 10,879 7,141 52%
8 Maruti Suzuki Baleno 10,476 7,698 36%
9 Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza 8,932 NA NA
10 Maruti Suzuki Omni 8,723 5,901 48%

Even last month, the Grand i10 saw a massive 31 per cent year-on-year jump in sales - even as news of the facelift had begun to filter in at the end of 2016. This puts it in spitting distance of the Maruti Suzuki Swift - the highest selling car in the segment.

Sales (in units) January 2017 January 2016 Growth
Hyundai Grand i10 13,010 9,934 31%
Maruti Suzuki Swift 14,545 14,057 3%

The Swift has been around for a long time now and its age is slowing up sales now, even though it remains ahead of the Grand i10. You can look at how the two cars match up on our spec comparison too where it does look like the Grand i10 is more compelling than the immediate rivals like the Swift or Tata Tiago. The facelift is of course expected to help Hyundai post even higher monthly sales for the model and try and beat Maruti Suzuki.

2017 suzuki swift(Maruti will be launching the 2017 Swift in India this year)

But even with the facelift, it will not be easy for the Grand i10. And that is because Maruti Suzuki will launching a new-generation Swift later this year. And let us not forget another threat from the newly launched Maruti Suzuki Ignis. The Ignis is similarly priced, gets ABS and dual airbags as standard across all variants and is loaded with features. So the Grand i10 will have to deal with a two-pronged attack from the market leader. But the Grand i10 remains one of the country's top selling models, in the top 5 most sold cars in January 2017 too. And yes it now offers more cabin features than the Creta and i20 - both higher segment products that are also high volume products for Hyundai.
