Highlights

Seems like it is the season for concept electric cars and Volkswagen has joined the bandwagon. After Mercedes Benz showed off the highly aerodynamic EQ Vision XX concept car and Hyundai showcased the streamlined Ioniq 6, Volkswagen is showing off another concept car under its ID umbrella brand for electric vehicles. This one is called the ID. AERO gives away its aerodynamic underpinnings. It will eventually be turned into a production vehicle which is expected to be launched in 2023.

EVs are critical for Volkswagen which has invested more than $80 billion in electric powertrains in the last couple of years. It already has launched a series of EVs like the ID. 3, ID. 4, ID. 5 GTX and ID. 6 and ID. Buzz electric van. Volkswagen is the leader in EV sales in Europe and many estimate that by 2024 it may even overtake Tesla as the global leader in EV sales.

As a group, Volkswagen wants to become climate neutral by 2050 and it intends to bring in a new EV every year till 2026. This is its ACCELERATE strategy. So far, the ID models have been SUVs, Vans and hatchbacks, so this will be the first sedan per se.

Volkswagen claims a range of 620 km on this car and a lot of space coupled with premium interiors. This will be its next global model for the US, China and Europe. It will have a 77 kWh battery pack and will be based on its MEB platform. It will also get 22-inch two-tone wheels that will be flush into the housings for aerodynamic purposes and the door handles will be replaced with illuminated touch surfaces for the very same reason.

It will launch first in China in the second half of 2023, and later on, the car will be offered in Europe and the US.
