Volvo XC40 Spotted Testing In Sweden

- It will be launched late in 2017 or early 2018
- It is an all-new model
- It will rival the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA
Along with the new generation XC60, Volvo was simultaneously working and testing the XC40, which will be the newest SUV in its portfolio when it is launched late in 2017 or in early 2018. The spyshots were snapped in Sweden, where the SUV is undergoing rigorous cold weather testing. Earlier, there were reports saying that the XC40 would be showcased as concept at the upcoming Shanghai Motor Show. Volvo says that the XC40 will be the first of the new '40-series' once it is launched globally. This means that one can expect new generation models of the V40 and the V40 Cross-Country in the next few years.
(Volvo XC40 Spyshot)The coming of the XC40 will also usher in a model that will bring in a sizeable volume of sales. This is something that Volvo claims too. For example, in 2015, it sold 503,127 cars globally. More than half of the units sold were SUV (XC) and Cross Country models. With respect to India, both Audi and BMW found success with the Q3 and the X1 and that will definitely set Volvo thinking. Bringing the VolvoXC40 to India makes a lot of sense, especially when the premium compact SUV space in India is growing and there are a limited number of players in the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA.
From the looks of it, the Volvo XC40 does get the signature Thor's Hammer headlamps and the familial front end. Also, Volvo says that the XC40 will be as big as the current gen XC60 that is on sale in India. This makes it bigger than all of its competitors listed above. The list of features and safety equipment will be high as is with any other Volvo model.
(Volvo XC40 Spyshot)As far as engines are concerned, the Volvo will get petrol and diesel engines. There might also be a 3-cylinder motor for the base variant and a plug-in hybrid maybe in the offing as well. The exact specifications are not known yet. Volvo might also bring in a fully electric drivetrain but that will be happening only in 2020.
