Volvo Unveils Concept 2.0-litre Engine that Develops 450bhp
Highlights
Volvo has unveiled a concept for a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder engine that develops an impressive 450bhp. The recently launched second generation XC90 comes with a T6 turbocharged & supercharged 4-cylinder 2.0-litre engine developing 320bhp, but this concept's pot has more power to offer.
Currently billed as a concept, the Drive-E motor is equipped with two parallel turbochargers that are fed by an electronically-powered turbo compressor. The compressed air is used to spool up the two parallel turbochargers rather than being fed to the cylinders.
Volvo goes on to say that they were able to completely eliminate turbo lag, thanks to the hardware arrangement. The engine was developed in collaboration with AVL, Denso and Polestar. For the time being though, the 4-cylinder Drive-E 2.0-liter powertrain is merely a concept to showcase the benefits of downsizing while adding more power.
