Highlights

Volkswagen had recently announced that it intended to refit the vehicles affected by the emission cheating software. Matthias Mueller, CEO, Volkswagen, had explained that the company will start informing customers with tainted cars over the coming weeks and months though not much information was provided about the 'when' - till now.

Mr Muller finally talked about a tentative time-frame for the repairs; he said, "If all goes according to plan, we can start the recall in January. All the cars should be fixed by the end of 2016." With that being said, the aforementioned plan is relevant to Europe and that for the US may be different.

Different because the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will first test the proposed 'fix' to ensure that it indeed keeps with the country's emission norms. Interestingly, VW had tried a different software update before the scandal became public knowledge but failed to get the California Air Resources Board's approval.

One must note that it is widely believed that the refitment will take a toll on the vehicles' performance and fuel economy.

While that's for Volkswagen's situation internationally, back in India the carmaker is facing investigation from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). Also, the carmaker has put a hold on the Volkswagen Polo's deliveries in India. A "temporary hold due to a technical reason", VW says it has nothing to do with the emission cheating scandal.
