Volkswagen Taigun Production Begins In India; Bookings Open

The upcoming Volkswagen Taigun compact SUV has entered series production, and the first model was rolled out today from Skoda Auto Volkswagen India's Chakan plant, in Pune. The SUV will be launched in September 2021.

Volkswagen India today officially commenced the series production of the much-awaited Taigun compact SUV. Slated to be launched in the third week of September 2021, the Volkswagen Taigun is the first model from the German carmaker to be built on the new MQB-A0-IN platform. The car has been rolled out of Skoda Auto Volkswagen India's Chakan plant, in Pune. Along with the production, Volkswagen today also commenced the pre-bookings for the new compact SUV. Interested customers can now pre-book the Taigun across Volkswagen's online and offline retail platforms for a minimum token of Rs. 25,000.

Volkswagen India has commenced the pre-bookings for the Taigun compact SUV

As of now, Volkswagen India has produced nearly 30 units of the car, however, the production will see a gradual ramp up in the coming days. The company Chakan plant itself has an annual production capacity of 1,80,000 units. Price announcement and deliveries for the new SUV is scheduled for September 2021.

Commenting on the announcement, Mr Gurpratap Boparai, Managing Director, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd. said, "Today, we embark on a journey that marks a significant milestone for Volkswagen, with the start of production of the Taigun. A thoroughbred Volkswagen, the Taigun retains the German engineering prowess, while achieving a localization level of up to 95 per cent. The Taigun has been designed to meet the needs of the discerning Indian customer and will be a competitive product offering in the fast-growing mid-size SUV segment."

Visually, the Volkswagen Taigun comes with sharp edges and bold character lines, and a lot of chrome, especially on the top-spec GT variant. It also comes with premium features like LED headlights, LED daytime running lamps, 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, end-to-end LED taillight with sporty black elements, and beefy cladding with chrome inserts, and faux skid plates. Inside, the VW Taigun gets dual-tone cabin with a black and grey interior, featuring a 10-inch touchscreen display, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and a fully digital instrument cluster. VW also offers other features like wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, wireless charger, electric sunroof, rear AC vents and more. On the safety front, the SUV comes with 3-point seatbelts for all passengers, ISOFIX mounts, rear parking camera, ABS, and 6 airbags among others.

The Volkswagen Taigun comes with two turbocharged petrol engine options - the 1.0-litre TSI and a 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine. The former is tuned to make 113 bhp and 175 Nm of torque and comes mated to a 6-speed manual and an optional 6-speed automatic transmission. The 1.5-litre TSI unit, makes 148 bhp and 250 Nm of torque, while paired with a 6-speed manual and a 7-Speed DSG automatic transmission.
