Volkswagen Records 8.1 Per Cent Sales Decline Worldwide In 2021

Volkswagen Passenger Cars has recorded a year-on-year (YoY) sales decline of 8.1 per cent in 2021 selling 48,96,900 units around the world as compared to 53,38,100 units sold a year ago. The company managed to record growth in the Middle-East / Africa, North America and Rest of the Asia-pacific market, while recorded de-growth in Europe, South America and China market including Hongkong. That said, the sales in decline is primarily attributed to the semiconductor shortage crisis leading to supply issues. The company has said that demand across market has been high and its order backlog in Europe is at an all-time high with 5,43,000 units still to be delivered, including 95,000 orders for all-electric IDs.

Last year, the company delivered more electric vehicles worldwide than ever before, handing over more than 3,69,000 electric cars including approximately 1,06,000 plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) PHEVs which is a growth of 70 per cent. Around 2,63,000 all-electric vehicles were delivered last year which is a growth of 97 per cent. Volkswagen's most popular BEV model worldwide is the ID.4 followed by the ID.3.
