Updated Mercedes-AMG GT R Spotted Testing At The Nurburgring
Highlights
- Mercedes-AMG GT R is the flagship model in the AMG GT family
- The updated AMG GT R is expected to be more aerodynamic
- The refreshed AMG GT R could come with a slight boost in power
Early this year in January, we told you that Mercedes is working on a hotter, updated version of its popular AMG GT R sportscar. Back then the company has teased a prototype model in one of its videos and now we have come across spy images of the near production test mule at the Nurburgring. While there is no official word on this yet, there is a chance that this updates AMG GT R could be the road-going version of the previously showcased track-focused AMG GT4 race car, or it could just be a minor facelift.
Now, visually it is a bit hard to tell the difference between this updated AMG GT R and the existing model, but a closer look reveals some new updates and the camouflage tells us where to look. For instance, we can see that the car now gets an updated front bumper with a pair of canards on either end which will further aid in boost the aerodynamics. The section above the central air dam also seems to have some minor tweaks but the camouflage is doing a pretty good job of hiding it. The rest of the car sees no noticeable changes apart from the black masking tape on the large black wind.
Under the hood, the Mercedes-AMG GT R will continue to use the same 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 engine. However, the carmaker could offer a power boost over the current output of 577 bhp and 700 Nm of peak torque. However, we do not know how many extra hoses the more hardcore version of the car will produce. We also, expect the new car to be considerably lighter, compared to the regular GT R's 1,655 kg kerb weight.
It's likely that Mercedes-AMG will reveal the update AMG GT R towards the end of this year or early 2019. We also expect the company to offer updates for the smaller AMG GT and AMG GT C Roadster along with GT R, at the time of its unveiling, but there is nothing concrete yet.
