- We expect the new 7-seater Jeep SUV to arrive in 2022
The upcoming Jeep 7-seater SUV, which is expected to be based on the Compass , has been spotted testing in India for the first time. An enthusiast has taken photos of two heavily camouflaged prototype models undergoing testing somewhere near Pune, Maharashtra, alongside the outgoing Compass SUV. Rumoured to be called the Jeep Grand Commander, the new SUV will essentially be a three-row version of the Compass, and upon its launch will compete with the likes of the Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner, Isuzu MU-X and the Mahindra Alturas G4.

Now, Jeep India confirmed its plan to bring a 7-seater SUV, which will be positioned above the Compass, in April 2020. Speaking to carandbike during an episode of Freewheeling with SVP, Partha Datta, who was back then the President and Managing Director, FCA India, and now the Head of Engineering, Design, R&D for Stellantis Asia-Pacific and India, said, "A 3-row SUV will be coming to the Indian market in the near future. In terms of dimensions and size, the SUV is closer to the Cherokee (sold in the US). Nothing else will come between the Compass and the 3-row SUV"
Now, visually there is not much that we can talk about at this stage, especially considering the amount of camouflage on the SUV. However, we can certainly tell that the SUV will have a massive footprint. In terms of styling, the front section of the SUV is expected to take inspiration from the existing compass, however, the profile and the rear section will be different. We do get to see a set of new alloys and what appears to be a set of new sleeker taillamps. Also, unlike the squared wheel arches of the Compass, this one comes with round wheel arches.

We do not get to see the cabin in these images, however, as mentioned earlier, the SUV will get a three-row seating layout. The dashboard design and most of the creature comforts are likely to be borrowed from the 2021 Compass facelift that was launched in India in January 2021. We are also likely to see some new additions made to the interior.
The SUV is also expected to share its powertrain with the Compass, which includes the 2.0-litre diesel engine, which will be mated to either the 6-speed manual or 9-speed automatic transmission. The Compass also gets a 1.4-litre MultiAir turbocharged petrol, paired with a 6-speed manual or an optional 7-speed DCT, but too soon to say whether the bigger SUV will get it or not. We expect the 7-seater Jeep SUV to be launched in India in 2022.
