  • It might make an appearance at the upcoming New York Motor Show

Hyundai has announced that it will name its new subcompact SUV as the Kona, taking the name from a small district in the islands of Hawaii. Hyundai will position the Kona below the Tucson in Europe and it will rival the likes of the Toyota C-HR, Honda HR-V and the Mazda MX-3. The Hyundai Kona will be introduced in Europe first, followed by Australia and other markets and will be Hyundai's fourth and the smallest model in its SUV portfolio. The launch of the Kona is in line with Hyundai's promise of launching 30 new models and variants across Europe by 2021. The company also believes that it can be the leading Asian automotive manufacturer in Europe by the said year as well.

We believe that the Hyundai Kona will make its world debut as a concept in the upcoming New York Motor Show and make to production sometime in late 2017. The Kona was first introduced as the Intrado concept three years ago at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

Whether the Hyundai Kona makes it to India, is slightly doubtful as the Creta is already doing well in the country. In fact, the Kona is based on the Hyundai i20 platform and will have similar options for the engines and the gearbox. The company says that the Kona will be one of the most spacious and feature-rich model in its segment.

Unsurprisingly, Hyundai has maintained its tradition of naming its SUVs as popular tourist destination cities such the Santa Fe and Tucson in USA, Veracruz in Mexico and now the Kona in Hawaii (USA again).
