Two-wheelers That Are Made In India But Not Sold Here
Highlights
- TVS Neo NX is a bebek sold only in Africa
- Mahindra Arro made specifically for export markets
- Over 3.2 million two-wheelers exported in 2020
India has always been big on two-wheelers. Be it entry-level scooters or premium big bikes, the country has a market and demand for it. It shouldn't be surprising then to know that India is the largest producer of two-wheelers in the world. But, as much as the country consumes, it also gives out. In fact, India is also the fifth largest motorcycle exporter in the world and over 3.2 million units were exported in 2020 alone. Interestingly, a few Indian manufacturers make two-wheelers exclusively for export to other countries. So, let's take a look at those two-wheelers today that are made in India but not sold in India.
TVS Neo NX
The TVS Neo NX is a 110cc bebek that is sold in Africa. It packs features like a strong suspension, disc brake, front and rear carriers and a fuel efficient engine. For long distance riding, the Neo NX gets a USB charger and comfortable seating ergos. This bebek draws power from a 110cc engine that puts out 8.5bhp and 8.5Nm of torque. It comes mated to a semi-automatic four-speed gearbox. India doesn't have a market for bebeks yet which is why the Neo is not sold here.
TVS Rockz
The TVS Rockz is a step-thru scooter that is sold in countries like Indonesia. It gets fancy features that include an USB music player with FM radio, immobilizer and side stand lock. Mechanically, it gets a 125cc engine that is capable of churning out 9.8bhp of peak power at 7,500 rpm and 9.8Nm of peak torque at 7,500 rpm. The step-thru scooter segment does not exist in India hence the scooter is only exported.
Mahindra Arro
On sale in countries like Bangladesh and Uganda, the Mahindra Arro is a less expensive sibling to the Centuro and Pantero. The engine is the same too: a 106.7cc MCi-5 engine with 8.7bhp and 8.5nM of torque. It comes paired to a four-speed transmission. Since Mahindra barely had a great stint with motorcycles in India, the Arro was not launched in the country.
TVS HLX 150X
Finding its major market in Africa, the TVS HLX 150X is a functional and practical entry-level motorcycle. Powering the TVS HLX 150X is a 147.49cc single-cylinder engine. The air-cooled motor is mated to a five-speed gearbox and produces 12bhp of max power at 7500rpm and 12.3 Nm of peak torque at 5000 rpm.In 2019, the TVS HLX series crossed a million sales milestone across various regions all over the world. It's also established itself in the Middle East and Latin America.
