Two-Wheeler Sales October 2017: Suzuki, RE, TVS Post Positive Growth

Riding high on the success of the festive season, two-wheeler manufacturers posted largely positive results for the month of October 2017. With the auspicious period of Dhanteras and Diwali, sales are expected to peak for most manufacturers and this year too, the festive season did not disappoint. While Royal Enfield, TVS, Suzuki posted strong increase in sales for October, it was interestingly Honda that saw a marginal dip in sales. Nevertheless, the company did register its best-ever festive season in India with over 13.50 lakh units sold between September and October. Here's a look at the sales performance of two-wheeler manufacturers in October 2017.

Suzuki
Suzuki Motorcycle India registered a growth of 22.27 per cent in sales for October 2017. The company sold 50,148 units last month, of which 46,020 units were domestic sales and 4100 units were exports. The With respect to year-to-date sales, Suzuki India sold a total of 3,31,419 units between April and October 2017, registering a growth of 38.43 per cent as against 2,39,405 units sold during the same period last year. The company said that its positive volumes was fuelled by the strong performance of the company's domestic sales.
Suzuki is aiming a sales target of 5 lakh units for the 2017-18 financial year. The company registered a sales performance of 3.50 lakh units in FY2016-17, and the manufacturer is all set to pass the figure in already seven months. Suzuki is now gearing up to introduce the all-new Intruder 150 cruiser in the country on November 7, which will take on the Bajaj Avenger 150. The company will also be looking to expand its footprint in India in the coming months.
Royal Enfield
Royal Enfield's overall sales for October 2017 stood at 69,492 units, registering a growth of 18 per cent, as opposed to 59,127 units sold during the same period last year. The bike maker reported a domestic sale of 68,014 units, growing by 17 per cent over 58,379 units sold on October 2016. The bike maker reported a sale of 65,209 units for its motorcycles of up to 350 cc, while sales of its higher capacity bikes stood at 4283 units, a year-on-year growth of nine per cent.
Exports doubled in October this year by 98 per cent with Royal Enfield shipping 1478 units, as against 748 units during the same period last year.
Royal Enfield's year-on-year sales stood at a total of 4,56,355 units between April and October, recording a growth of 22 per cent, as against 3,73,551 units sold during the same period in 2016. Exports stood at 10,037 units during the same period, registering a growth of 25 per cent over 8022 units sold between April and October 2016.
Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India
While Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India registered its best-ever sales for the festive season at over 13.50 lakh units, the company registered a marginal drop in volumes for October 2017. The two-wheeler maker sold a total of 4,66,535 units last month, as against 4,92,237 units sold during October 2016, a drop of 5.22 per cent. Domestic two-wheeler sales stood at 4,37,531 units, a drop of 7.5 per cent as opposed to the 4,70,358 units sold in October 2016.
Interestingly, exports for October 2017 saw an increase in volumes with 29,004 units shipped last month, a growth of 32.57 per cent as opposed to 21,879 units exported during the same period last year.
TVS Motor Company
TVS Motor Company reported total sales of 3,17,411 units in October 2017, a 3 per cent hike over the 3,08,3690 units sold during October 2016. The manufacturer registered a 1.5 per cent hike in its total two-wheeler sales last month retailing 3,08,364 units, as against 3,03,885 units sold during the same period last year. Domestic two-wheeler sales stood at 2,70,372 units in October as against 2,72,229 units sold in the same month last year.
Scooter sales grew by 15.7 per cent at 1,06,910 units, against 92,417 units sold last year. Motorcycle sales stood at 1,25,409 units, a growth of 3.2 per cent over the 1,21,550 units sold in October 2016. Exports stood at 45,437 units in October 2017, a growth of 29.3 per cent over 35,134 units shipped during October last year. TVS also announced that its three-wheeler sales increased by 88.3 per cent to 9047 units in October this year, as against 4805 units sold during the same period last year.
Bajaj Auto
Bajaj Auto witnessed a largely positive month of October with both domestic and export sales witnessing a hike. The homegrown two-wheeler maker sold a total of 3,82,464 units last month, a growth of 7 per cent as against 3,56,168 units that were sold in October 2016. With respect to motorcycle sales, Bajaj Auto retailed a total of 3,25,778 units in October, growing by 6 per cent, as opposed to the 3,07,892 units sold during the corresponding period last year. The company witnessed a 1 per cent decline in domestic volumes with 2,11,553 units sold. Exports increased by a healthy 20 per cent at 1,14,225 units in October instead of 94,895 units shipped during the same month last year.
October also saw Bajaj Auto register its highest ever domestic sales for commercial vehicles with 35,657 units retailed. The company witnessed a growth of 38 per cent as against 25,784 units sold during the corresponding month last year. CV exports dipped by 7 per cent as the manufacturer registered a sale of 21,029 units in October 2017 instead of the 22,492 units shipped last year. Bajaj Auto's total CV sales (domestic + exports) stood at 3,82,464 units in October, growing by 7 per cent.
