With India celebrating Swarnim Vijay Varsh as a commemoration of 50 years of its triumph in the 1971 war, a special auction will take on 20th December for marking the occasion. Several vintage cars will be auctioned including a Cadillac Imperial sedan dating to 1934 and a classic Fiat Topolino model. Along with a Baby Austin, an exclusive Mahindra Jeep CJ-3B, owned by the Indian Army earlier, will also be auctioned.
The auction proceeds will be donated to a welfare group for Army veterans as per the organizers. A preview of nine vintage models has already taken place at Mumbai-based Historic Auctions, at the museum for vintage cameras in Gujarat, Museo Camera. The auction will physically take place in December, followed by an online rerun. 16 paintings of iconic artist and filmmaker Muzzafar Ali, drawing inspiration from his childhood experiences of vintage cars, were also shown at the museum during this preview. They will also be auctioned in December. Ali stated that Indians have great taste in automobiles and his paintings are inspired by his experiences of playing in old cars back in his childhood.
The event had Maharaja Gaj Singh of Marwar-Jodhpur as its chief guest along with other dignitaries like Bollywood actress Gul Panag, foreign ambassadors, vintage car collectors, and many others. Both Gul Panag and Gaj Singh received honorary lifetime membership of the coveted Heritage Motoring Club of India or HMCI. They were conferred membership by HMCI President KTS Tulsi. The nine cars shown included the 1924 Austin 7 or Baby Austin, 1958 MG A-1500 sports car, 1959 Cadillac Sedan de Ville in the iconic Cadillac Pink, a rare Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser, 1982 Mercedes-Benz 200, Fiat Topolino 500C, and more.
An original 1958 Mercedes Benz 180 Ponton was shown in an unrestored state. There was also a Chrysler Windsor sedan from 1947. Historic Auctions stated that the auction will be the first such specialist automotive auction in India.
