Highlights

  • The tractor has a top speed of 24.4 kmph
  • It has the same performance as a petrol based tractor
  • It will be available for sale in Japan starting this week

Toyota has launched a new EV - despite being reluctant about the drive for electrification across the world has launched its first EV. Well, not exactly as this is not by Toyota Motors but by a subsidiary of the group called Toyota Industries Corporation which has designed a small EV that has a top seed of 24.4 kilometers per hour that's fundamentally a towing tractor that's meant to be just used at airports. Toyota of course makes forklifts, looms, lift trucks, automotive components, and even passenger vehicles.

This comes after Japan's Ministry Of Land, infrastructure, transport, and tourism has identified 21 domestic airports that will work towards the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and this new towing tractor bull help with these efforts.

As a group Toyota has largely focused on hydrogen fuel cell cars like the Mirai

Toyota claims that this new tractor performs equally to gas-engine based tractors delivering the same towing force, driving speed, and climbing capability. It has a 600-amp-hour battery on board and Toyota has also ensured the new tractor also has the same turning radius and wide field of view.

Its standard equipment also features an LED headlight, a multi-function display which also has a maximum speed setting and over-speed alarm. It also comes with optional extras like a safety belt interlock, a better positioned charging port, a rear-inch device for hitching a trailer and a rear LED work light.

The all-new towing tractor has now gone on sale in Japan and is available through 40 Toyota L&F dealers in the country. This is one of the first vehicles of its kind to infiltrate the aviation industry but considering where the world is heading with the proliferation of the electric powertrain - there will be many more in the coming decade.
