Japanese carmaker Toyota is working on a new powertrain for its Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform and will also be showcasing the same at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. The new powertrain will be compatible with either a CVT or a 6-speed manual transmission and will also be available in a 2.0-litre petrol along with a 2.0-litre hybrid and could also get a four-wheel drive system as well. Toyota is betting big on electric vehicles and says that by the year 2023, it will be launching 17 variants of nine engines currently in production along with 10 more variants of the six hybrid engines that it currently has. Also, there will be 10 new versions of the four transmission options that carmaker has in its current portfolio. In all, over 80 per cent of Toyota and Lexus cars, by 2023, will have TNGA based powertrains. This should be good enough to reduce CO2 emissions emanating from Toyota vehicles, by 18 per cent.

The new 2.0-litre petrol engine that Toyota is developing will be the world's most thermally efficient motor, the company claims. Also, the hybrid version of the same engine will be particularly fuel efficient. These engines will make their debut on the new generation Auris, which will be showcased at Geneva.

Coming to the new CVT units that Toyota has been developing, it will be having a 'launch gear' feature, which is said to be more responsive and could improve fuel efficiency by six per cent. Also, the new 6-speed manual gearbox has shed 7 kg weight aiding in better efficiency.

Lastly, Toyota is also developing two new four-wheel drive systems which are the dynamic torque vectoring four-wheel drive and E-Four four wheel drive. The latter has been developed purely for hybrid cars while the former variant will be fitted in petrol cars.
