Toyota Trademarks The Hyryder Name In India
Highlights
- The Toyota Hyryder name could be used for the brand's new midsize SUV
- The Hyryder is based on the DNGA platform co-developed with Suzuki
- The Hyryder is expected to get a petrol-hybrid engine on launch this year
Toyota Kirloskar Motor has trademarked the Hyryder name in India, which could be the name of one of the several new launches planned by the automaker. Toyota has at least new offerings planned for launch this year and this includes the new-generation Innova and the midsize SUV that the company is co-developing with Suzuki. It is likely that Toyota's iteration of the midsize SUV could be called the 'Hyryder' upon launch. Meanwhile, the next-generation Innova could be badged as the 'Innova Hycross' and is expected to co-exist with the Innova Crysta currently on sale.

The Toyota Hyryder has been under development for a while now and will get its Maruti Suzuki badged sibling when it goes on sale later this year. The model is said to be internationally codenamed Toyota D22 and is said to be based on the DNGA (Daihatsu New Global Architecture) modular platform. The new offering will take on the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, MG Astor and the likes in the segment.
Moreover, the new Hyryder could be powered by a plug-in hybrid engine, which would also explain the 'Hy' in the name. Toyota already offers hybrid powertrains on the Camry and Vellfire models, and it is expected to bring a more affordable alternative to the Hyryder when the SUV goes on sale. This could be similar to the technology seen on the new Honda City Hybrid that recently went on sale. Essentially, the system gets a strong electric motor and battery pack that allows for more distance to be covered on electric-only mode. The petrol motor acts as a range extender recharging the battery and kicking in at higher speeds. The battery also recharges using regenerative braking.

It's likely that the Hyryder and Hycross will use the same petrol-hybrid powertrain in India and will be exported to different markets too
The hybrid powertrain promises better efficiency as well as lower tailpipe emissions. It will also help the automaker compensate for the lack of a diesel engine. It is likely that Toyota and Maruti Suzuki could offer a more affordable petrol-only engine option on the lower variants to keep the entry prices in check on the SUV.
Meanwhile, the Toyota Innova Hycross is likely going to be the name of the new-generation model that will be positioned alongside the Crysta. The new offering is expected to be based on the TNGA-C platform shared with the Corolla internationally and will see the MPV move to a monocoque architecture instead of a ladder-on-frame chassis seen on the current version. This brings better driving dynamics, lower weight and higher fuel efficiency, as well as improved cabin space and comfort. The Toyota Hyryder could arrive as early as June or July this year, while the Innova Hycross is expected towards the end of the year, possibly around the festive season.
