Top Three In The World Announced For 2022 World Car Awards: India-Made VW Taigun Makes The Cut
Highlights
- VW Taigun makes it to the top 3 alongside Opel Mokka & Toyota Yaris Cross
- The top 3 finalists for 2022 World Car of the Year are all electric
- The Mercedes EQS, BMW iX & Genesis GV70 are finalists in World Luxury Car
The finalists are out! After the second round of voting, the 2022 World Car Awards jury from nearly 30 countries have selected the Top Three in the World across all six categories. The made-in-India Volkswagen Taigun joins the Opel Mokka and Toyota Yaris Cross in the 2022 World Urban Car category. In the past we have seen Indian-made cars like the Hyundai Santro, Maruti Suzuki Swift and Ignis (all current generation) feature in the World Urban Car finalists. The Taigun is sold in India, and will also be exported to 30 countries - with Mexico being the largest market outside India. It will be badged VW T-Cross in Latin America, while it is likely to retain its Taigun badge for right-hand-drive markets. The Renault Kiger (also made in India) was also in the top five shortlist for this year's award - but it (and the Dacia Sander) has not progressed into the top three.

For overall World Car of the Year, it is an all-electric affair - the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Kia EV6, and Hyundai Ioniq5 make up the top three. The Mustang Mach-E is a huge flagship product and also a volumes play for the blue oval in the EV space. The car has been received very well, with demand surging in the second half of 2021. It is also now hotly anticipated in several global markets and is likely to see a 2023 debut. The Ioniq 5 and EV 6 share their E-GMP platform but are significantly different in performance, cabin and design terms. They have been celebrated around the world and lauded for the innovation and sophistication they bring to their brands, and also for their performance. Both cars are expected to launch in India this year.
The two are also finalists across several other categories. The Korean cousins share the Top Three in the World status for 2022 World Car Design, along with the Audi e-tron GT. That Audi flagship is also in the running now for 2022 World EV of the Year - a brand new category. Here too it is joined by the Ioniq 5 and the Mercedes-Benz EQS. The 2022 World Luxury Car has the EQS too, and it competes there with two SUVs - the BMW iX and Genesis GV70. And the Top Three in the World for 2022 World Performance Car sees the Audi e-tron GT / RS e-tron GT, BMW M3/M4 twins, and Toyota GR86/Subaru BRZ are the frontrunners.
