Top Five Fastest Cars in the World

In the world of physics, speed is defined as the time rate at which an object moves along a path. But, in the automotive world, speed gets a new meaning every time a supercar breaks the top-speed record. Now, there's not much incentive to set new speed records apart from bragging rights. But, manufacturers still go all guns blazing to break thresholds just to claim that they have the fastest car in the world. This list covers five cars that have not only broken speed records but also pulled at the heartstrings of enthusiasts around the world.

1. Buggati Chiron Super Sport: 304mph

Buggati is known for making fast cars. But, the Chiron Super Sport dwells in a league of its own. Just a little shy of breaking the world record, the Chiron has a claimed top speed of 304 miles per hour. And it also went on to become the first car in the world to go beyond the 300mph mark.

2. Buggati Chiron Super Sport: 304mph

Not a lot of people would have heard of SSC as a car manufacturer. And, it's surprising, considering the kind of supercars it has bestowed in the world. Now, there's quite some controversy associated with the Tuatara and its top-speed record. You see, the Tuatara actually managed to do 316mph when it was tested in October 2020. It not only broke the Chiron's records but also took the top position on the podium of fast cars. But, the manufacturer later admitted to a GPS error that depicted its speed incorrectly. When it was tested again, the Tuatara managed 268mph, which isn't slow by any measure.

3. Koenigsegg Agera RS: 278mph

In November of 2017, this RS version of the Agera was declared to be the fastest car in the world. And this feat was achieved in the most interesting manner. Nevada Department of Transportation had closed an 11-mile stretch of road right outside Las Vegas. Koenigsegg decided to use this as an opportunity and turned up with a customer-owned Agera RS and pulled two high-speed runs in opposing directions, setting a top speed record of 278mph. This record was then overtaken by the Chiron two years later but the Agera managed to enter the Guinness Book of World Records that year in November 2017.

In 2014, Hennessey took to Florida's Kennedy Space Centre to test the Venom GT on the 3.2-mile space shuttle landing runway. Recording a top speed of 270mph, it took on the Buggati Veyron's set-top speed of 253.8mph. Unfortunately, NASA didn't permit Hennessey to do an opposite direction run, or else the Venom GT too would have featured in the Guinness Book of World Records.

5. Buggati Veyron Super Sport: 267.8mph

Buggati had been dominating the fastest car space well before Hennessey and Koenigsegg jumped onto the bandwagon. To deal with the newbies, Buggati came up with a beefed-up version of the Veyron, the Veyron Super Sport. This Super Sport was limited to just 30 cars worldwide with a power output of a whopping 1184bhp and overhauled aerodynamics for the car to handle better when flying beyond 250mph.
