Highlights

  • The 100-110cc segment is one of the most competitive spaces
  • Hero MotoCorp has been ruling this segment for the longest time
  • A host of new products have entred the segment in recent times
With scooters having posted impressive growth figures in recent years, entry-level motorcycles seem to have lost their novelty, or so is the larger mindset. However, lower capacity commuter motorcycles continue to be the choice for customers in smaller towns and rural markets, while also being reliable options with respect to higher fuel efficiency. Let's not forget that the 100-110cc commuter bike segment also happens to be the most competitive with almost all products carrying a price tag just under Rs. 60,000 (ex-showroom).

Ruled by Hero MotoCorp for the longest time, a host of new products have made their entry into the segment giving a tough fight to the Indian bike maker and the customer of today is creatively spoiled with options. With urban markets also warming up to lower capacity bikes, we list down the top commuter motorcycles under Rs. 60,000 that tick all boxes.

1. Hero Splendor iSmart

The latest model to join the 110cc commuter segment, the Splendor moniker is a legend in this space and Hero MotoCorp has used the nameplate on its first indigenously developed offering. The Splendor iSmart then, promises the same reliability as its predecessors while the latest model is BSIV compliant powered by an 110cc single-cylinder, air-cooled engine good to produce 9.4bhp and 9Nm of torque. The motor is paired to a 4-speed gearbox. Hero has also equipped the model with its iSmart technology that is essentially a start-stop system and shuts off the engine in order to conserve fuel. In addition, you also get a segment first auto headlamp function, something only seen on performance bikes in India.

2. 2016 TVS Victor

Much like the Splendor, the Victor is a popular nameplate for TVS Motor and the company decided to resurrect the same when it introduced its latest commuter motorcycle earlier this year. So the 2016 TVS Victor was a highly anticipated motorcycle and has quite lived up to the expectations. While it may not be the most stylish motorcycle around, the Victor scores high on features and functionality, making it a lucrative offering. The bike is equipped with the segment largest 60-watt bulb, semi-digital instrument console, engine kill switch, petal front disc brake and much more. The suspension has been tuned for a pliant ride quality, while wide seat accommodates the rider and pillion with ease. Power on the Victor comes from an 110cc single-cylinder engine with a 3-valve setup that churns out 9.4bhp and 9.4Nm of torque, while paired to a 4-speed gearbox. The fuel efficiency is a claimed 76 km/l.

The motorcycle borrows its underpinnings from the Honda Dream Series, but with a sharper and edgier styling that appeals to younger buyers, while power comes from the 110cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine that belts out 8.2bhp and 8.63Nm of torque. The motor is paired to a 4-speed gearbox and weighs a light 111 kg, giving it a peppy feel.
