  • The NHTSA is concerned about this new infotainment system
  • The system is powered by AMD GPUs that are similar to the ones in the PS5
  • The NHTSA has already been concerned with Tesla because of Autopilot

Tesla has been under fire for a while from the NHTSA for its safety standards. Tesla has often overhyped its autopilot system as a self-driving system while its own executives internally have said it to be at best a level 2 ADAS system. Now, compounding the problem is the fact that it has added triple-A video games on its infotainment system which according to the US-based agency is another safety issue. The in-car video game system works while driving.

Already there are heavy fines for people who use the phone while driving and Tesla has gone ahead and added a system that runs high-resolution games that are comparable to video game consoles like the PS5. Tesla has built a system that's powered by AMD RDNA 2 GPUs which is comparable to the system on the PlayStation 5.

Tesla has built a team in Austin, Texas which is working on video games and user interface. It is working on building a video game platform called Tesla Arcade with the intention of as many games onboard as possible.

"Expressing concern about distraction-affected vehicle crashes, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Wednesday it is discussing with Tesla Inc the electric carmaker's software update that lets users play video games on a touch screen mounted in front of the dashboard," said NHTSA.

"Distraction-affected crashes are a concern, particularly in vehicles equipped with an array of convenience technologies such as entertainment screens. We are aware of driver concerns and are discussing the feature with the manufacturer," NHTSA added.

For Tesla's part, this system is meant to be used while the car is parked and charging.
