Tesla Teases 4680 Cell Battery Production At Berlin Gigafactory
Highlights
- The new 4680 batteries will be produced at the Berlin gigafactory
- The batteries are now part of the structure of the vehicle
- Even the seats are getting installed over the batteries
Tesla has been working on its 4680 battery cells for now over a year and at the launch party for its Berlin gigafactory the world's most valuable automaker teased the production of these next-generation battery cells which are said to make the electric cars cheaper, with better range, and faster charging. Tesla estimates the first vehicle to come out of the Berlin gigafactory will be the Model Y which has become one of its best-selling cars, so much so it estimates that it will surpass the Model 3 in sales soon.
Elon Musk has revealed that the output of Model Y and 4680 battery packs by the end of 2022 could be 5,000 per week if not 10,000 per week.
Right now it is running a trial production run for these batteries. Its battery partners, Panasonic and LG Energy Solutions have been trialing the battery tech and found some success. Panasonic's new CEO has also committed to making a major investment in these batteries as well.
These batteries are going to be structurally quite integrated with the design of the car. Tesla provided some previews to the same. The seats now sit on top of the 4680 battery packs in full for example which wasn't the case with the older battery technology.
Tesla has already been on a tear with deliveries even though thanks to the pandemic and the global semiconductor shortage it has been forced to push back the launch of the CyberTruck and Roadster. Though even with that happening, it has been the most insulated brand with regards to production issues with a lack of supply as it wrote new firmware to work with new hardware that it didn't use earlier.
