Tesla Model Y A 'Few Years' Away

Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, stated in a tweet that the Model Y will arrive in a 'few years'. Though one may assume that the car is about three years away, demand for the Tesla Model 3 may push that timeline by a few more years.

  • Tesla Model Y is a highly-anticipated compact SUV
  • Expected to be based on the same platform as the upcoming Model 3
  • Orders for the Model 3 could delay the Model Y's arrival

Elon Musk, CEO, Tesla, in a recent tweet said the electric carmaker will bring in the Model Y in a 'few years'. While the statement may give the impression of the car being another three years away, orders for the Model 3 will be the most important consideration in the near future. Considering that, the Model Y is likely to be more than just 'few' years away. Tesla Model Y, the highly-anticipated, compact SUV, is expected to based on the same platform as the upcoming Model 3. While the company is yet to release images of the Model Y, it will presumably look like the Model 3's elder sibling, thanks to an elevated roofline and raised floor. Other details, including that about its design, are in short supply.

Musk had previously mentioned the Tesla Model Y during the Q2 2016 earnings call, where he said, "I mean, also to be clear like the priority vehicle development after the Model 3 would be the Model Y, I guess, the compact SUV, because that's also a car that where we expect to see demand in the 500,000 to 1,000,000 unit per year level. So it's the obvious priority after the Model 3."

Tesla intends to start production of the India-bound Model 3 in July this year. Towards that end, the company temporarily halted production at its California facility in February to brace for the production of its newest sedan. In fact Musk revealed the "release candidate version" of the India-bound Model 3 last month. The term implies that the model is practically the production version i.e. Tesla is unlikely to introduce any substantial design or content changes on the car before it goes into production.

As far as Tesla Model 3's India launch is concerned, the company is yet to finalise a date though Elon Musk 'hopes' it will happen this year.
