Tesla has revealed a patent for the potential of folding seats in the Cybertruck which will go on sale in 2022. This comes after Musk had tweeted asking Tesla followers if it would be a good idea for the seats to fold and reveal the bed of the car. Tesla faces stiff competition from Rivian and GM both of which have beaten to launching an electric pickup truck. It will face more competition in 2022 when Ford launches the F-150 Lightning.
The new patent details a compelling system which enables the car to fold its front-mid seat and rear seats. This filing is said to be similar to what Tesla had in the Cybertruck prototype, but in that, there were no rear folding seats.
Tesla needs to prove that apart from the panache of its futuristic design, infusion of technology like a new autonomous driving system, the Cybertruck is practical. Rivian and GM have proven with the R1T and the Hummer EV pickup that those cars marry performance, range, and practicality brilliantly.
There will be more on the Cybertruck soon as Elon Musk has stated that he will be sharing more details about the vehicle in the Q4 earnings call.
