Tesla Discontinues RWD Model S 75 Variant. Here's Why

Electric car-makers Tesla discontinued sales for the rear-wheel-drive Model S 75 version from its product portfolio on Sunday, as it looks to shift to an all-wheel-drive line-up for its Model S product line-up. The company had first announced of its decision to pull the plug on the sales of the RWD Model S in July this year. The AWD Model S will be introduced in the near future. The Model S 75 variant, which was till now the cheapest Tesla on sale, will be replaced by AWD 75D variant. With this, the only other RWD option in Tesla's portfolio is the Model 3.

According to reports, Elon Musk, CEO, Tesla, was concerned with people thinking that the Model 3 was a revamped version of the Model S, as the former is the only other electric vehicle in the company's portfolio with RWD option. The move also looks to streamline their product line-up for the Model S, as the company wanted to differentiate between the base variant of the Model S with the Model 3.
Musk also announced that Tesla will be introducing AWD variants of the Model S this year, but reports suggest that the plan has been pushed to sometime next year.

Tesla had introduced the Model S in 2012, while the RWD Model S was introduced in 2014. The company has sold close to 200,000 units of the Model S since its launch.
