Highlights

Earlier this year, home-grown automaker Tata Motors launched the new generation Nano in India, christened GenX Nano. In addition to various styling and feature offerings, the car came with an automated manual transmission (AMT) unit. Reportedly the growing demand and increased waiting period for the AMT variant has led Tata Motors to look into producing the AMT unit locally, which is expected to be rolled out in 2016.

Currently the AMT unit that does duty on the new GenX Nano is being imported by Tata Motors from Magneti Marelli. "We are looking to localise the kit and it should happen during the next calendar year," said Mr. Girish Wagh, the Senior Vice President of Programme Planning and Project Management at Tata Motors.

According to Mr. Wagh, currently almost 40 per cent of the total bookings for the new Tata GenX Nano are for the AMT variant, which is why Tata Motors is looking to localise the supply. By localising the supply, the carmaker will be able meet the increased demand for the AMT variants and at the same time considerably reduced the long waiting period for the car. As of now Tata Motors produces 2000 units of the new GenX Nano per month at the carmaker's new Sanand manufacturing plant.

Coming to the car itself, the new Tata GenX Nano comes powered by the same 624cc, two-cylinder MPFI petrol engine that powered the previous generation Nano. That being said the company has added a new cylinder head and aluminium block to help the car run smoother than before. As for its power figures they too remain unchanged and the car still churns out a maximum of 38bhp, while developing a peak torque of 51Nm. The new AMT gearbox in a 5-speed unit.
