  • The XUV500 comes with AWD, while the Hexa gets selectable Drive Modes
  • The Hexa is a lot more powerful compared to the XUV500
It was at the Geneva Motor Show last year, that we saw the Tata Hexa in its concept avatar. Although, we never had a doubt in our mind that Tata Motors will bring the Hexa to India. Well, it's finally here, although it's not launched yet. We have already driven it and know exactly what it's all about. Yes, there is something for the competition to worry about and from what we've heard, the price of the car will be extremely competitive and this means that the cars like the Mahindra XUV500 have something to worry about.

The XUV500 was first launched in 2011 and that's when Mahindra upped the ante for those looking for a car that looked stylish and was great on and off the road. Fast forward four years and the company decided to give it a mild facelift and successfully achieved to keep the customer interested. Tata Motors comes to the arena with a lot of experience and some bitter experiences; case in point - the Aria. Yes, the Safari was successful and all credit is due to that SUV, yet the lack of innovation as clearly showing.

The Hexa, then, is an attempt to undo all those errors and bring out a car that will be from the start, a successful one. We wait to compare both in real world conditions, a specifications comparison will help put some light on what to expect. Meanwhile, here are 10 things to know about the Hexa.

Tata Hexa Is More Powerful Than The XUV500

Let's first look at the dimensions. The Hexa is longer by 200 mm, wider by 13mm, and shorter than the Mahindra XUV500 but when it comes to wheelbase, the Hexa has a good 150 mm advantage when compared to the XUV500. Both the SUVs have a good ground clearance and that stands at 200mm and this is important, considering both cars have decent on and off road capabilities.

Dimensions Tata Hexa Mahindra XUV500
Length 4788mm 4585mm
Width 1903mm 1890mm
Height 1791mm 1785mm
Wheelbase 2850mm 2700mm

On the engine front, the XUV500 comes powered by a 2.2-litre mHawk engine which punches out 140bhp and develops 330Nm of torque. The Hexa also gets a 2.2-litre VARICOR diesel engine which is the more powerful one here with 156bhp to offer and the torque figure too is 400Nm which betters the XUV500. However, it will all depend on how the power is delivered to the wheels and the only way we can find that out when we get them together.

Both cars are equipped with a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission (torque converter) but what will be interesting to see is how the Hexa's ladder frame chassis holds out against the XUV500s monocoque construction and this we think will play a huge role when it comes to power-to-weight ratios. Here's our specs comparison on Tata Hexa, Toyota Innova Crysta and Mahindra XUV500

Now the XUV500 is available with an AWD as well, while the Hexa gets selectable Drive Modes, in which you can opt between Automatic, Comfort, Dynamic and Rough-Road. Both the cars are feature rich but the XUV500 has another ace up its sleeve in the form of a sunroof and well, the Hexa will not get that.

While both the cars can seat 7 individuals, the Hexa looks to be the more spacious one but we'll have to wait for both cars to be together to get into the nitty-gritty of things. The chief differentiator, however, will be the price and while the XUV500 starts from Rs. 12.42 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs. 18.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

With bookings commenced, Tata's plan is to undercut that price or at least make it competitive enough and this tactic might work considering the product at hand. We wait to find out Tata's strategy behind the car and considering it hit the nail on the head with the Tiago, the Hexa will certainly need to follow this plan.
