Highlights

Tata Motors has been in the SUV space and we’ve seen cars like the Sierra, Sumo, Safari and very recently the Hexa, make their way into the Indian market. It was only recently that the company decided to enter the burgeoning compact SUV space and rolled out the production ready Nexon at the Geneva Motor Show. But it’s not the first subcompact SUV to hit the Indian shores, and it finds itself in the mid of a tussle, as customers are being spoilt for choice. The car that has become the king of this segment is the new Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and with sales on the rise, there’s a lot more competition to deal with. One cannot discount Ford India in this fight as the EcoSport has seen a whole bunch of rivals and yet is a force to reckon with. The EcoSport is a segment pioneer and there’s no denying that ford has had its fair share of success with it. In fact it was the first subcompact SUV to make heads turn with the amount of features that were packed in. We compare the specifications of both these cars and find out which on has the advantage.

    Exterior

The Tata Nexon is not your typical boxy SUV and is curvier and the rounded design takes inspiration from the rest of the cars that were launched recently, the Tiago and the Tigor. The Tata Nexon gets the has been styled with Tata’s Impact design philosophy and gets a coupe-ish roofline. There’s a horizontal strip that divides the headlamp housing and makes the overall design look very neat. It also gets a unique ceramic finish around the headlamps, fog lamps and LED tail lamps. It’s high above the ground too and that makes it look even more like an SUV.

The Tata Nexon has a ground clearance of 209mm which is more than the EcoSport

The EcoSport, though, looks butcher and that’s why more aggressive. It looks sportier than the Nexon  and more rugged too. It gets the octagonal grille which we see on most of the cars from Ford and a high bonnet and tailgate-mounted spare wheel which add to its overall appeal. It too has a high ground clearance of 200mm and that certainly gives it an SUV-like stance. The car however, is due for a refresh and that may happen this year.

    Interior

Tata Motors has always been known for its spacious cabin and the Nexon is no different. It’s a well thought out cabin as there’s a 6.5-inch HD touchscreen display, climate control, rear air con vents and voice commands. There’s also an 8 speakers for the Harman infotainment system. Then there’s the rotary drive mode controller for the driver to shift between the three drive modes – Eco, City and Sport. There are also umbrella holders, which we thought was a nice touch and finally there’s the boot space and that’s a massive 350 litres.

The Ford EcoSport gets a load of features but the Nexon comes with Apple Carplay and Android Auto

Now, the Ford EcoSport gets only 346 litres of bootspace but there are a lot of cubby holes that you get to store the small things. There are also features like a push-button start, steering-mounted audio controls, Bluetooth telephony and audio streaming, auto climate control, rear-parking sensors and tilt and telescopic adjustment for the steering wheel. On the safety front, the Ecosport comes equipped with 6 airbags on the top-spec Titanium+ variant, something that the Nexon cannot match up to.

    Engine and Gearbox

The Tata Nexon will come with all-new engines. There’ll be a 1.2-litre, turbo-petrol, three-cylinder Revotron motor which churns out 108 bhp and 170Nm of torque and a 1.5-litre diesel Revotorq which puts out the same power as in petrol but there’s more torque on offer, all of 260Nm. Both engines are mated to a six-speed manual transmission, but for the time being there’s no automatic in the pipeline.

The Ford EcoSport comes with three engine options while the Nexon just gets two

The Ford EcoSport comes with three engine options – the 1.5-litre petrol engine making 110 bhp which is similar to the Nexon, but the torque is far less than in the Nexon at 140 Nm. Ford also has the 1-litre EcoBoost engine which is good for 123 bhp and 170Nm torque but that’s a pricey car to say the least. Then there’s the diesel mill which puts out 99 bhp and both engines are available with a 5-speed manual transmission. There’s also the option of a six-speed automatic gearbox.

    Pricing

The Ford EcoSport is the car that comes with a range of engines and variants and prices start at Rs. 7.1 lakh and go all the way up to 10.71 lakh (ex-showroom India) for the top of the line diesel variant. The Tata Nexon too will be priced on similar lines and we can’t wait to see what Tata has in mind. Going by the pricing strategy applied on both the Tiago and the Tigor, Tata Motors might just undercut all its rivals and that could provide them with an opportunity to grab a larger slice of the pie in the segment.
