Skoda Makes Its One Millionth SUV

Skoda Auto has rolled out its millionth SUV ever made. The SUV, a brand new Karoq, was rolled out from the Kvasiny plant in the Czech Republic. The SUV will be delivered to a customer in Spain. The Karoq is one of three SUVs Skoda currently makes across the world, the others being the Kodiaq, which is also available in India and the Kamiq, which is available exclusively in China. Skoda started making SUVs in 2009 with the introduction of the Yeti, which was discontinued in 2016 and replaced by the Karoq a year later. The Karoq is based on the MQB platform, which also underpins the larger Kodiaq and other cars like the Octavia and the Superb.

While the Yeti, with its 7 year run in a pre facelift and facelift version has been the highest selling SUV in the Skoda range with 680,000 units sold, the Kodiaq has been quickly catching up with over 215,700 units sold in just over a year since launch. The Karoq, which was also launched internationally late last year has also raked up an impressive 87,800 units and counting. The Kodiaq is made / assembled in the Czech Republic, India, Russia, China and Germany. The China-only Skoda Kamiq has sold 12,000 units since its launch earlier this year.

The milestone comes at a great time for the Skoda brand especially considering the fact that it will be Skoda spearheading the Volkswagen Groups efforts in India with its own new SUV to take on the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Reault Captur and the upcoming Nissan Kicks and Jeep Renegade. There will also be a second larger SUV - probably a derivative of some sort of the current Karoq to take on the likes of the Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson. The Indian SUV will be based on the same MQB A0 platform that underpins the millionth SUV from Skoda and will feature the Volkswagen Group's TSI engine lineup.
