SIAM Briefs New Ministers About Auto Industry's Current Situation and Potential

A delegation of senior level SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) team led by Mr. Vikram Kirloskar, President, SIAM met ministers of Commerce, Road Transport, Environment and Heavy Industries on 16th and 17th June 2014.
The prime objective of these meetings was to brief the ministers of the current situation and challenges that are faced by the industry. The team also highlighted the potential of the industry to contribute to the growth of manufacturing, exports as well as the economy as a whole, including rural sector.
The suggestions proposed to the ministers included protraction of the excise duty cut benefits, new foreign trade policy, enhanced export incentive for vehicles,
streamlined and free inter-state movement of vehicles, promotion to electric and hybrid vehicles and prevention of overloading, encouraging alternative fuel vehicles, enhancing road safety, emission and fuel efficiency norms, fleet modernisation and scrappage policy etc, a statement issued by SIAM said.
In an official statement, Mr. Kirloskar said, "We were very encouraged by the response of all the Ministers and feel confident that Government would take a clear and holistic view of the automotive industry and work towards creating an enabling stable policy framework to ensure sustained growth of the auto industry."
