Should You Buy A Used Mahindra Alturas G4? Here Are Some Pros And Cons
Highlights
The Mahindra Alturas G4 is the flagship SUV in the carmaker's line-up, and it is the rebadged version of the second-gen SsangYong Rexton. Even though the Rexton has received a facelift globally, the Alturas remains unchanged, and that is because Mahindra is looking at selling its ownership stakes in the loss-making South Korean company, and thus has no plans to launch an update the SUV in India. We would also expect the company to eventually discontinue the model in India. It has already removed the FWD (front-wheel drive) version of the Alturas, and right now, only the 4x4 version is on sale in India.
The Mahindra Alturas G4's massive size will guarantee an imposing road presence.
All that said, the Alturas G4 is certainly a good and capable SUV and a worthy rival to the likes of the Toyota Fortuner and Isuzu MU-X. But right now, a used Mahindra Alturas G4 will offer more value compared to a new one, and if you are planning to get one, here are some pros and cons you will need to consider.
Pros:
- While looks are subjective, we think the Alturas is a good-looking SUV. Its massive size will guarantee an imposing road presence and it is even equipped with features like a large chrome grille, LED headlights and DRLs, chunky alloy wheels and large roof rails.
- The Alturas G4 comes with a premium fit and finish and the cabin too offers good space. It is also loaded with features like an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a powered seat for the driver, a 3D around-view camera, sunroof, auto climate control and more.
- In terms of safety, the Alturas G4 gets dual airbags in the 4x2 variant and 9 airbags in the 4x4 variant. The standard fitments include - electronic parking brakes, Electronic Stability Programme, Active Rollover Protection, Hill Decent Control, Hill Start Assist, Traction Control, ISOFIX seat mounts, seatbelt warning, and rear defogger among others.

Cons:
- The 2.2-litre diesel engine of the Alturas G4 might feel a bit underpowered, you want outright performance. The 2157 cc, four-cylinder engine makes 178 bhp at 4000 rpm and 420 Nm of peak torque at 1600-2600 rpm.
- The Alturas G4 doesn't have the best ride quality either. It feels a bit bouncy and even the handling is not the best in the segment and there is quite pronounced body roll as well.
- The Alturas never managed to match the popularity of the Fortuner or the Endeavour, so sales were mostly in double or triple digits. This means you are not likely to find too many options in the used car space. And if you find one, it won't come cheap, depending on the model year and condition, you'll get one for around Rs. 23 lakh to Rs. 30 lakh.
