  • Lewis Hamilton was handed a 5 second penalty
  • Bottas could not convert his pole position into a win
Ferrari had a field day at the 2017 Bahrain Grand Prix as it divided the two Mercedes drivers and conquered. Sebastian Vettel crossed the chequered flag bringing Ferrari its second win of the 2017 Formula 1 season in the Bahrain Grand Prix. Vettel beat Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton after a 5 second time penalty saw the Briton lose ground and eventually hampered his chances of victory.

Vettel started third on the grid, but on the first lap itself on turn one managed to squeeze past Lewis Hamilton and eventually managed to jump pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas in the first round of pit stops after a safety car period. Vettel then forged a healthy lead after which even a late charge from Hamilton did nothing to squash the Ferrari's hopes for a podium finish.

Hamilton was hit with a five-second time penalty for impeding Daniel Ricciardo in the pit lane and this saw Mercedes change its strategy and keep its star driver out for longer before making a final stop which clearly meant that Hamilton would go after Vettel in the closing laps of the race. But despite being on fresher tyres, Hamilton could not catch up to the quadruple world champion and the Ferrari driver went on to record his second win of the year and saw himself move at the top of the drivers' championship.

Hamilton and Bottas rounded out the podium for Mercedes with the pole winner finishing 20 seconds down on Vettel thus failing to convert his maiden F1 pole into a win. Kimi Raikkonen finished fourth while Daniel Ricciardo ended up fifth for Red Bull. Felipe Massa led Williams' charge in sixth place, finishing ahead of Sergio Perez and Romain Grosjean. Nico Hulkenberg was ninth for Renault, while Esteban Ocon rounded out the points in P10 for the third race in a row.

Fernando Alonso was the last classified finisher in P14 for McLaren, pitting with three laps to go due to an engine failure. An angry Alonso was heard talking on the radio to his team that the car he was driving didn't have any power and it was one of the slowest thing on the track. He called in an engine failure and recorded his second DNF of the season. All eyes now on the Russian Grand Prix which is scheduled for the end of this month.
