Rendering 2014 the deadliest, the data also adds that the year saw 4.5 lakh crashes that left 4.8 lakh people injured. With more than 1.41 lakh fatalities due to crashes, the number has grown by 3% as compared to that of 2013.

Crashes involving two-wheelers lead to the death of 13,787 drivers, while 23,529 other people were also killed in such accidents. Out of the total fatalities, two-wheelers and trucks crashes were responsible for nearly half of that number.

The NCRB data further elucidates that precarious driving and speeding are amongst the biggest factors for casualties on the road. While reckless driving claimed over 42,000 lives, speeding accounted for almost 49,000 deaths.

According to these numbers and data, Uttar Pradesh was at the top of the list with 16,284 fatalities, followed by Tamil Nadu with more than 15,000 deaths. The list of top 5 states in relevance to the aforementioned data comprises Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Rajasthan. These states are responsible for more than 40 per cent of the total fatalities. In relevance to cities, Delhi topped the list with 2,199 deaths. Chennai was second on the list with 1,046 such deaths.

The report also points out that 1 in 6 road crashes was reported near a residential area, and that 5.3% of the crashes occurred near educational institutions.
