Latin America has been one of the key markets for French carmaker Renault. And with the ongoing Sao Paulo Auto Show, we were expecting to see some exciting offerings this year. Living up to our hopes Renault has unveiled the new Kwid Outsider concept that has been developed in conjunction with the Renault Design Latin America (RDAL). In fact, early this year even Renault India displayed an off-roader concept called the Kwid Climber at the 2016 Auto Expo, which we are eager to see in its production guise.
The new Renault Kwid Outsider concept is built on the same CMF-A platform as the regular Kwid and is essentially a crossover-ish version of the car that has been designed as per the needs of the Brazilian and Latin American market. It has also been revealed that about 80 per cent of the car's content consists of new parts that have been developed by Renault Technologies Americas for their home market. Whether this concept will enter production or not is something we'll have to wait and watch.
In terms of looks, the new Kwid Outsider Concept is not largely different from the regular Kwid but it does get new exterior features and equipment that highlights the SUV-like styling and robustness of the vehicle. Firstly there is this all new Copper-Gold colour picked up from the Duster along with some green accents on the plastic claddings of the car. While the grille design and headlamps remain unchanged the concept does feature a new front bumper with larger air intake-like plastic cladding on either side with round fog lamps inside a green accented housing. While the air dam remains the same there is a new silver-green faux skid plate below it.
The underbody plastic cladding has been redesigned and it looks much more prominent now. The concept also comes with new sporty alloy wheels and larger roof rails. Even the rear profile of the car has been updated with a black plastic casing for the tail lamps, larger rear bumper and a big faux skid plate to complete the package.
While the overall layout of the cabin is similar to the cabin of the Brazilian-spec Kwid, it does get some add-on treatment in line with the concept's exterior design. There is this big orange bezel around the black piano finish centre console with the air-con knobs right below it. Similar orange accents are used all over the car's interior like the seats, steering wheel, air vents and instrument cluster as well, which is a new analogue unit instead of the all-digital cluster that we get in the India-spec model.
Among other additions, the centre console has been slightly redesigned, with the window control buttons now located under the 7-inch MEDIANAV display. It also gets a door lock and rear defogger button placed beside the window controls.
