Highlights
- Biden is set to sign an executive order to propel the adoption of EVs
- He wants 50% cars to be EVs in the US by 2030
- His team is working on a plan to incentivise the sale of EVs
President Joe Biden is set to sign an executive order which will accelerate the implementation of electric transportation across the United States. He is setting a new target for half of all vehicles to be sold in the US to be zero-emissions based by 2030 which is a more aggressive timeline set even by countries in the EU. In order to get there, the Biden administration proposed new point of sale EV incentives.
Anticipating this move from the government, Ford, GM and Stellantis have all announced a joint goal for 40-50 per cent of new cars to be electric by the end of 2030. Biden has announced his plan to "Drive American Leadership Forward on Clean Cars and Trucks".
undefinedWe have to leverage a whole-of-government effort to lift up workers and strengthen American leadership in the clean cars of the future.

To set that all-out effort into motion, I'm signing an executive order with a target of electrifying 50% of all vehicles sold by 2030.
President Biden's Build Back Better Agenda and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal invest in the infrastructure, manufacturing, and incentives that we need to grow good-paying, union jobs at home, lead on electric vehicles around the world, and save American consumers money. Today, the President will announce a set of new actions aimed at advancing these goals and increasing the impact of his proposed Build Back Better investments - positioning America to drive the electric vehicle future-forward, outcompete China, and tackle the climate crisis," announced the white house.
"Specifically, the President will sign an Executive Order that sets an ambitious new target to make half of all new vehicles sold in 2030 zero-emissions vehicles, including battery-electric, plug-in hybrid electric, or fuel cell electric vehicles. The Executive Order also kicks off development of long-term fuel efficiency and emissions standards to save consumers money, cut pollution, boost public health, advance environmental justice, and tackle the climate crisis," the statement added.
The President has talked about initiatives that help the automotive industry achieve this goal. There will be a review of fuel standards and new infrastructure investments in the infrastructure bill. There is also talk of the bill that will reform the EV tax credit. The bill is aimed at improving the EV incentives by removing the 200,000 US deliveries per manufacturer limit and increase the credit to $10,000 for EVs produced in the US and $12,500 for EVs produced in the US by union workers.
Biden has pushed electrification in a dramatic U-turn from what the Trump government was implementing. Recently, he was also present at the launch of the Ford F-150 Lightning Pick Up truck which is powered by an electric powertrain. He said was going to be buying it and endorsed it.
