Pollution Checks for Vehicles Will Become Mandatory Soon
Highlights
The Delhi government is said to be working on the introduction of a new pollution check system in the city. Under this new arrangement, car owners will not be issued annual fitness certificates without the said pollution check.

Pollution checking centres across Delhi will be connected to the transport department's vehicle database and will update relevant information for a vehicle's registration number. This data, in turn, will be used to analyse a particular vehicle's fitness, and if it should be issued a certificate or not. Furthermore, the machines will also be calibrated automatically, thus limiting human interference. Interestingly, the said system is already in effect in Bengaluru.
A government official said that vehicle owners will be unable to secure annual fitness certificates unless they meet the stipulated emission standards or fail to get the vehicle tested. However, this new strategy will be used only for commercial vehicles initially; personal vehicles will be brought under its purview later.
The Delhi government has been struggling to control the alarming pollution levels in the city. Authorities have also contemplated banning diesel vehicles and cars older than 15 years from plying on the city's roads, though a definitive directive is yet to be issued.
