Highlights
- The Polestar 4 is planned for a 2023 release
- It will be based on the Polestar 2 and will be an SUV
- The Polestar 3 which is based on the Volvo XC90, will come in 2022
Recently, it was announced that Polestar had gone public via a SPAC merger which values it around $20 billion. As a part of this ambitious effort, Polestar revealed that it was working on three new models which include an electric SUV and now its CEO Thomas Ingenlath has revealed that in 2022 it will launch an SUV called the Polestar 3 which will be based on the Volvo XC90 and will share the same SPA2 platform. It will be an expensive car that will go aggressive on aerodynamics and will be more like a coupe-like SUV competing with something like the Porsche Cayenne at upwards of $88,000.
But the model it is working on for 2023 could be the game-changer as that will be the Polestar 4 and it will be an affordable SUV based on the Polestar 2 and that car will cost in the region of around $52,500. The Polestar 4 will be smaller than the Polestar 3 but will also share the coupe-like traits. It will share the drivetrain with the Polestar 2 with its 400 bhp dual motor configuration.
Fundamentally, it will be Polestar's take on the Volvo C40 Recharge. It will be a rival to EVs like the Tesla Model Y. The Polestar 4 could also be built on a new platform called the SEA which is different from the CMA platform used by the Polestar 2 and the Volvo C40 Recharge.
Last but not least, is the Polestar 5 which has already been seen in concept form -- Precept Concept which was seen at the Goodwood motor show. This car will come out in 2024 and is being pitched as a high-end grand tourer and it could also be based on the SPA2 platform.
