Highlights

  • The ET5 comes in 3 variants and will be available in September
  • Its standard model comes with 550 km of range
  • Its 150 kW model gets 1,000 km of range

Chinese EV maker Nio has announced its latest electric car, the ET5 which promises an astounding 1,000 km range. While the range on paper is impressive it has been rated against the Chinese CLTC standard, not the US-based EPA standard which is used on cars like the Lucid Air Dream edition. The EV maker which was hosting its Nio Day event in Suzhou also announced updates for the deliveries of its ET7 sedan and also revealed plans for global expansion by 2025.

The starting point for the development of the ET5 is the silhouette of the ET7 which integrates autonomous driving sensors into its body lines and also shares some elements from the EP9 hypercar that the company unveiled a couple of years ago. It comes with the Nio Autonomous Driving (NAD) systems coupled with the Aquila Super Sensing stack and the Nio Adam SuperComputing, on-board computational platform - that will enable the car to achieve safe autonomous capability in scenarios such as highways, urban areas, parking and even battery swaps. It has been stated that the autonomous features will be rolled out after validation and will cost $107 per month as a part of a subscription service.

The ET5 starts with a range of 550 km for the standard model but scales to 1,000 km on the ultra long range

It is not the fastest car around and has been designed to be somewhat a Tesla Model 3 rival with it being able to achieve 0-100 kmph in 4.3 seconds. It will get high-performance four-piston fixed callipers developed specifically by Nio which will provide an impressive braking distance of 33.9 metres from a speed of 100 kmph to a standing stop. It also gets a pretty low drag coefficient of 0.24 which means this car is also very aerodynamic.

It gets a standard range of 550 km with its 75 kWh battery and 700 km on the long-range 100 kWh battery. The ultra-long-range edition gets 1,000 km of range with a gargantuan 150 kWh battery. As far as in-car tech is concerned, it gets PanoCinema, a panoramic digital cockpit feature that integrates augmented reality and virtual reality. It has partnered with an AR hardware maker called NREAL for glasses that are designed for the ET5 that can project a 201-inch screen at six metres for the drivers. It also provides a 256 colour curtain of ambient lighting and supports a Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 surround sound system.

This car starts at $51,450 before subsidies and $40,468 with the battery as a service model and deliveries for the EV are expected to start in September 2022. Nio also announced that its flagship ET7 sedan will have its deliveries start in March 2022. It also said that its 0-100 kmph acceleration has been improved now to 3.8 seconds and its drag coefficient has been further improved to 0.208. It also revealed that it will be entering the European market beginning with Norway and Germany. Its operations in Norway has already started, but now there are plans to get its EVs to Sweden and Denmark by 20205.
