New Volkswagen Polo's Diesel Engine to be Assembled Locally

Volkswagen India has set-up a new diesel engine assembly line, at its Chakan, Pune based manufacturing unit, to assemble the 1.5-litre diesel powertrain of the new Polo. The company said that that it will invest Rs 240 crore (30 million Euros) on production of this engine.

    Volkswagen India has set-up a new diesel engine assembly line, at its Chakan, Pune based manufacturing unit, to assemble the 1.5-litre diesel powertrain of the new Polo. The company said that that it will invest Rs 240 crore (30 million Euros) on production of this engine. Local assembling of engines will start at the end of this year. Along with this announcement, the company also asserted that a new engine testing facility will also be built adjacent to the engine line.

    Company officials have hinted that the new assembly line will be designed into the existing structure of Volkswagen's Pune plant. To be built in an area of 3450 square meter, the new engine assembly line will have a capacity of assembling around 98,000 engines in three shift system. The 1.5-litre diesel engine is presently being offered on the new Polo and Polo GT TDI variants launched recently in India. Volkswagen presently imports 1.5-litre diesel powertrain from Europe.

    Assembling engines locally is a huge step taken by the auto maker towards its promise to intensify localisation in India. Housed in new Polo range,1.5-litre diesel powertrain is offered in two states of tune. The one powering Polo diesel and Cross Polo is capable of developing a peak power output of 90 PS at 4200rpm along with top torque of 230Nm. While the 105 PS version is packed inside the performance oriented GT TDI variant of Polo.
