  • For child occupant safety the Renault Koleos has scored 79 per cent
  • The Koleos gets 8 airbags and autonomous emergency braking system

The new 2017 Renault Koleos SUV has scored a 5-star rating in a recently conducted crash test by the Europe's New Car Assessment Programme a.k.a. Euro NCAP. According to the crash test report, the new-generation Koleos has scored 90 per cent for adult occupant safety and 79 per cent for child occupant safety (test results were for children of the ages of 6 and 10). Similarly, the Koleos received 63 per cent for pedestrian safety and 75 per cent for safety assist equipment.

The 2017 Renault Koleos, which was crash tested by the Euro NCAP, was the left-hand drive (LHD) model. The 5-door SUV was tested on four impact parameters - front offset impact, front full-width impact, rear whiplash impact and lateral impact. In both front offset and lateral impact, the Renault Koleos offered good protection to both the driver and passenger. That is with the excepting of the driver's right tibia, which rated as marginal during front off-set impact. The SUV offered a similar level of protection to occupants of different sizes and to those sat in different positions. On the other hand, during the full-width rigid barrier test, protection of the head and chest of the rear passenger was rated as marginal and that of all other critical body areas was good or adequate.

Coming to child occupant protection, in the frontal offset test, readings of tension in the neck of the 10-year dummy indicated poor protection for this body area, while protection to the chest area of the 6-year dummy was weak. Protection to the rest of body parts was either good or adequate. At the same time when tested for lateral impact in the side barrier test, protection of both dummies was good for all critical parts of the body.

In terms of safety features, the Renault Koleos which was tested came with dual front airbags, side head and chest airbags, and even side pelvis airbag for the driver and front passenger. The Koleos also comes with pretensioner and load limiter for all seat belts. ISOFIX child seat mounts and fasteners are also available for the rear seat along with the option to switch-off front passenger airbag in case the occupants are using rear-facing ISOFIX child seat. Among other safety features, the Koleos comes with an autonomous emergency braking system as standard, along with lane assist system and speed assistance.

Currently, Renault has discontinued the Koleos SUV in India, but we do hope that the company considers bringing it back. As of now, the only SUV in Renault India line-up is the Duster which scored a disappointing zero star rating in Global NCAP crash test early this year. Having said that the company is now set to launch the all-new Renault Captur in India, and if it's anything like the Brazilian spec Captur, which scored a four-star rating in Latin NCAP crash test, then that would be something really commendable.
