New-Gen Toyota Camry Unveiled At North American International Auto Show
Highlights
- New-gen Camry is built on the Toyota New Global Architecture
- The new Camry gets major design and cosmetic enhancements
- ASEAN-spec Toyota Camry will be slightly different
Earlier we told you that Toyota is working on the eighth generation Camry sedan, which will be introduced in 2017. The car recently broke cover at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and is set to go on sale in the US market as a 2018 model. The ASEAN-spec model, however, will be slightly different from the one showcased in the US and will be revealed later this year.
As we have mentioned in our earlier reports, the new generation Toyota Camry has been built on the company's 'Toyota New Global Architecture' (TNGA). It is the same platform that underpins the new-gen Toyota Innova Crysta and the new Fortuner. So it has that keen look with bolder styling and sharp character lines seen in the latest Toyota vehicles.
Up front, the 2018 Toyota Camry gets an all new face dominated by the new grille design with body colour panel on the black honeycomb pattern grill and the company symbol at the centre. It is flanked by sharp horizontal headlamps with projector light and LED daytime running lights that complete the busy design. The front bumper looks well sculpted and adds an aggressive feel to the car. The middle section houses the massive air dam bordered by black chrome and flanked by large air intakes on either side. The bonnet is also new and comes with some visible muscular lines that add to its bold stance. The hybrid model differs in a few areas like - the Toyota symbol is backlit in blue and there is a massive seven-slat chrome grille for the front bumper.
From the side profile, the new Camry looks a lot sleeker and stylish. There is sharp character line that runs through the door handles and almost touches the tip of the taillight. The new alloys on the standard model look slick and go really well with the overall design. The hybrid model, although, come with different multi-spoke alloy wheels. The roofline has a slightly sloping effect and the new ORVMs come with integrated LED turn signal lights. The rear looks bold and stylish, but also a lot busy. There is a small spoiler attached to the boot lid, and the two-piece LED taillamps look very premium. The Camry badge is now placed at the centre of the boot lid with the number plate housing right below it. But the real highlight of the rear is the skid plate and the quad exhaust setup.
In fact, last year in November, the Chief Engineer of the Toyota Camry - Masato Katsumata, told us that the new Camry will be more dynamic and fun to drive, which is clearly dictated by the new bolder design. The cabin has also received a major makeover. There is an all-new driver-oriented dashboard layout comes with a touchscreen infotainment display at the centre and two large horizontal AC vents above it. The design of the centre console looks very unconventional and is flow is guided by some silver lines.
In the US the new Camry will be offered with two powertrain options - a 3.5-litre V6 and a 2.5-litre petrol engine. The Camry Hybrid, on the other hand, will get the next-gen Toyota Hybrid System, which includes a 2.5-litre petrol motor working in tandem with an electric motor. As for the India-spec model, we expect it to come with the smaller petrol motor and the hybrid powertrain.
