New-Gen Audi A7 Sportback Teased
Highlights
- The second generation Audi A7 will be based on the MLB Evo platform
- Unlike the first gen model, the new A7 won't get a W12 engine as optional
- The 2018 A7 will compete with the upcoming new Mercedes CLS & 6 Series
There's a lot happening at Audi and after having recently showcased the new generation of the A8, it's now time to bring out the A7. The A7 has always been a stylish car and has the distinction of setting itself apart from the rest of the pack in the Audi stable. Come October 19, Audi is all set to launch the second generation of the A7 and there's a lot that's going to be different. The carmaker has in fact teased the silhouette of the new gen car giving us a glimpse into what to expect from the A7.
And from what we can see the A7 Sportback will lose the very distinctive design which made the A7 stand out amidst not just the Audi line-up but also amongst its rivals. It looks like the A7 will adopt the rear design of a mainstream car and will get the same continuous tail lamp design as in the A8 but the significant changes will come in the form of technology used as also active and passive safety features.
The Audi A7 Sportback will adopt the five-door hatchback body style that will make it more practical than the A6 sedan, a new generation of which is due in 2018. The A7 will be based on the MLB Evo platform which will see it become lighter, with a high level of rigidity. It should get engine options similar to the A8, so a 3.0-litre V6 petrol and diesel option but don't expect it to get a W12 engine.
We expect the A7 to make its public debut in December this year, probably at the Los Angeles Motor Show considering that the US is a big market for a car like the A7. Given the fact that Mercedes-Benz is readying the new generation of the CLS and BMW too with the 6 Series Gran Coupe, it will be interesting how Audi plays this bit against the rivals.
