Highlights

  • An average car consumes about 0.04 ltr of fuel per minute while idling
  • New engines can be pretty expensive to replace!
  • A person can cook on a full-functioning & well-maintained engine of a car

Winter can be a tough time for everyone. The bone-chilling temperatures can lead to severe health issues and a general sense of discomfort. The same applies to cars. Cars have difficulty operating in winters, especially if the engines are idling. For a while, the myth has existed that it is better to idle the engine before driving. This is wrong, and there are several reasons for that; everyone should be aware of those.

What is idling?

Idling is the practice of running an engine while the car is not in motion. The engine is kept on, but the car does not travel any distance.

The reason as to why the myth has existed

Engines combine the gasoline with air, and then that combination is compressed with the help of a piston. This mixture then gets ignited, which provides the power to the car for it to gain motion.

Admittedly, during wintertime, it gets harder for the gasoline to evaporate. Hence, the solution offered was to let the engine idle for some time so that the mixture could warm up, and then the car is started, and the journey begins.

Problems arising with idling

Idling of the engine can lead to problems like:

  • Dirty fuel injectors: Dirty fuel injectors lead to engine misfiring on many occasions.
  • Clogged air filters: Air filters prevent dirty pollutants from entering the engine. Without them, the engine might misfire.
  • Bad spark plugs: Improper ignition can lead to problems while starting the car.

Various environmental problems can occur due to idling as well. The fuel economy is significantly reduced, leading to more harmful emissions. Also, idling leads to more amounts of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and particulate matter.

Solutions to this issue

The best thing to do, which the biggest car manufacturers recommend, is to drive instead of letting the engine idle. Instead of going full speed from the beginning, let the engine warm up by slowly driving around for about 10-15 minutes. Once the engine has warmed up, the car is primed for acceleration.

One of the key features that can be incorporated to eliminate this problem is installing engine block heaters. Engine block heaters use electrical elements. These electrical elements heat the engine before the travel begins. This way, the car is good to go from the beginning, and idling becomes unnecessary.

Idling does very little in warming up the engine, so it is useless. The environment is harmed, but precious resources are wasted for a method that doesn't even work. If ice occupies the outside of the car, take a minute to knock off the ice, and then you are good to go!
